The First Ten Focus Group Feedback for The Word Collector
Because The Word Collector was Book of the Day, some of our most trusted members have carefully looked over the cover, the description, and other aspects of this book as a part of purchase-intent focus group. We then asked each participant in the focus group if they planned to buy and read the book, and why they planned to buy and read the book or not. Their answer to that question and reasons are displayed below. We call this awesome feature The First Ten Focus Group.
Keep in mind, the responses from the members are not reviews. This is purchase-intent focus group which means the participants are people who have NOT yet bought or read your book. A purchase-intent focus group is an important and extremely useful marketing tool for any product, not just books. For other products, you might walk on the street and show people an item in a package and poll them about whether they would buy if or $X or not. These kind of focus groups are one of the ways big marketing companies find the ideal price points for products and test the effectiveness of different packaging. The focus group can help you identify your market so you how to target ads of your book, and it can (but may not) provide you new useful info about your "packaging" (e.g. your book cover, your book synopsis on Amazon, etc.). The point of the focus group comments is to give you information from people who have not bought or read your book about why they plan to buy your book which will help you in marketing the book. These are not reviews or critiques of your book because they are not from people have read the book. This is a marketing tool, not reviews. The trick of book marketing and book advertising is that you have to convince people who have not read your book yet that your book is worth buying and reading. For marketing, it doesn't matter much if people love your book after reading it if you cannot convince potential buyers before they read it that they will love it.
IMPORTANT: Any score over 10% is considered very good. And any score above 0% is acceptable. This is because we only poll about 20 or so readers, and all readers have to say "no" to almost all books. Over a million books are published each year. Even a very active reader cannot come close to even reading 1% of books out there.
This is also why publishing books is such a tough industry.

If it wasn't for this program, I would not have sampled this book. Though the cover, title, and blurb are all so adorable, and the reviews seems to highlight the educational value of this book, I don't have children and wouldn't have someone to read this one to. Based on what I read, the book does seem to be edited well. I love the inviting and bright illustrations here. Also, the language seems simple enough for children to understand. However, as I have said, I am not the target audience. Therefore, I do not plan on finishing this book.

This book looks absolutely adorable and perfect. I loved the premise, I love the illustrations. I was positive before I even read the sample that I would be finishing this book and I’m pleased to say that I was not wrong.
After reading the sample I am even more excited to read it. The book seems clever, exciting, and hilarious. I especially loved the image of the ostrich with her head in the ground. It definitely seems professionally edited. I think it might be a bit wordy for a children’s book from what the sample looks like, but I enjoyed it all the same.

I would have sampled this book based on the genre, blurb and OBC review. I'm always looking for new books to read with my nieces. This is right in their age group, and I was interested in the educational aspect of it. After reading the sample, I will be finishing this book. I liked the illustrations! They really drew me in. The formatting was good as well. I also liked that it started off with the grammar lesson right away. There wasn't anything I didn't like. It did seem to be professionally edited.

Based on the cover and title of The Word collector by Evelyn Dunbar Webb, I would have chosen to sample this book even without the prompt from the first ten program. I am a fan of children's book like this that have intriguing cartoon-like illustrations and have a lesson to impart to the readers. Priscilla, the main character, is a word collector but she never uses them; No wonder she has no friends although she really wants them. This premise was really cool and the story seems to have been professionally edited based on what I read.I will not be reading this, only because it does not fit into my busy schedule but I do recommend it especialy for children between the ages of 4-11.

I wouldn't have sampled the book without this program simply because I'm not interested in children's books. The sample featured only two pages, with very little text, so I couldn't judge the writing style. Since the book was free yesterday, I checked out a few more pages on my own to be able to say something more. I didn't find any mistakes and I believe the book is edited. The story flows well and, despite its simplicity, it's charming. The illustrations are nice and the story overall seems to be suitable for the target audience. I haven't come across other children's books with this premise, so I believe it's original. As I don't have any children around, I won't be reading the rest.

I love the ostrich and her name, Priscilla. She’s very cute and her hobby of collecting words and putting them in notebooks is very unique. This book is terrific at explaining nouns, verbs, and adverbs. What a fun way to teach kids these important fundamentals! I bet it would be fun to quiz kids and see if they could come up with the correct answers. I didn’t notice any errors in the text and the illustrations are beautifully colored and very professional. I can’t think of anything to improve this book. If I was homeschooling kids, this would definitely be a book I would grab to aid learning. The review was mostly positive, but I think sampling the book myself was a bigger influence on my opinion. I don’t personally need any books like this currently, but I think it would be an excellent resource for parents and teachers.

I don’t have young children in my life, so at this point “The Word Collector” isn’t a book I’d purchase. After sampling the beginning, I thought the strongest element of this children’s story is the illustrations. The pictures are bright and eye catching, and they are also very detailed. I thought the language used was appropriate for the intended audience. This could be a great children’s book, but since I don’t have a reason to explore this genre, I don’t plan to read any more of this book.

I wouldn't have sampled this book on the basis of the genre because I'm not in the target market or looking for books for anyone who is. It's not free in my region and I won't buy it as it's not something I have any reason to read. What I saw looked professionally edited as I didn't notice any errors. I liked the illustrations and subject best as I could see that this would strongly appeal to children. I don't think anything needs to be improved. I haven't seen an OnlineBookClub review; this didn't affect my decision because it's obvious from other information that this book is aimed at a particular age group.

I might have sampled this book without this program because I have a little daughter. The OBC review was positive and enjoyable. It convinced me to read this book with my daughter. After I read the sample pages, I thought the book was professionally edited. I liked the illustrations, the character of the ostrich named Priscilla, and that the story teaches children about different kinds of words. I will read this book because I liked it.

This is not a book I would have normally read. I don't have any need for a children's book. After reading the sample, my opinion is the same. It seems like a sweet book, but I have no reason to read it. I really liked the concept of a book teaching kids about types of words. The only suggestion I have for improvement is to make the font a little bigger. It seems pretty small for a children's book. It seems professionally edited.

This book's beautifully illustrated cover had me itching to read it. The review was informative and urged me on even more. From what I read, I liked how child-friendly the writing was and the cartoons had me in awe. For this reason, I will read the rest of the book. There's absolutely nothing I would change about the book and I commend the author for a job well done.

I'm always interested in children's books and would definitely have checked this out without the program. An added benefit of it being a grammar teaching aid raised my interest even higher after reading the sample. It was spotless in terms of grammatical errors and I have no recommendation for improvement. I loved the quality of the pictures the most. The OBC review I saw was impressive and contributed to my interest. I will finish it up.

This book sounded like a great idea and I think that it would really help with teaching young ones about the format and structure of the English language. I enjoyed the sample and think that it may even assist people learning English. Although I liked it, I do not intend to buy and read the whole sample. I have done post-graduate University study and therefore I do not feel that I need this book. The graphics were what I enjoyed most about it, very nice story and what a cute idea to use an Ostrich. I did not find any errors in the sample and the formatting was fine. However, I did feel that there was a bit too much negative space and so I would fill up the pages a bit more. Not sure if this was just in the sample.

This book has adorable illustrations, but I don't think that it is written for kids. I could see it as a elementary school textbook or reference book about grammar. I would not buy this book for my kids, who love to read. It would not be engaging to them because it seems like the words were introduced with definitions and not in a creative and fun way that would engage more children to read through it. The idea is excellent, but I do not think it is something that a child ages 6-8 would have fun reading.

I think since this book was free I would have read it either way. I read the whole book since it was short, and I enjoyed it! It’s a cute little book. I didn’t find errors, which leads me to believe the book was professionally edited. The book did have an official OBC review which confirmed my decision to finish the book! It was a great read and I enjoyed the depth of character built in such a short book. I can’t think of anything that needs to be improved on.

I would have sampled this book without First Ten since the cover is so cute and the OBC reviewer's comments about the inventive illustrations and educational value of the story made me think it would be a good choice for a children's gift. Although my kids are older than the target age, the reviewer's description of the content impressed me enough that I wanted to know more. The Amazon summary is well written and gives a clear explanation of what the book includes. I particularly liked the mention that the book includes puzzles and other activites since the activities would reinforce the info in a fun way. I enjoyed reading the sample which is edited well. I loved the way the story begins with a good description that Priscilla the bird collects words by writing them in notebooks, and the definitions for the type of words (verbs, nouns, etc.) kept in separate notebooks. The picture of all of the notebooks being stored in a closet is very cute. I wasn't surprised by the sample since the OBC review was glowing; I agree with the reviewer's opinions about the great illustrations and easy-to-understand story. Since the book has a good mix of entertainment and educational content, I am interested in buying the book.

If I had not read the sample I would not have read the book as I do not really read children's books. After reading the sample I have not changed my mind. I really liked the writing style and I think it could help any young child learn about grammar in a very fun way. I liked the art style as well, but I think having a background and covering the entire page with drawings can establish a stronger cohesion between text and image. It was professionally edited though. I did not read an official review but that did not affect my decision.

The cover and title for "The Word Collector" are very attractive, and I love children's books, so this tome immediately caught my attention. The synopsis and review didn't really help because I'd already made up my mind, but it was still nice to know exactly what it's about. Since the book's so short, I read the whole thing and really liked it. The pictures are very attractive, and it was funny that Priscilla collected so many words but wouldn't use them. My favorite part was when Priscilla actually spoke; it was so exciting! It's also great that this book is perfectly edited as a book on language should be. I have no suggestions because this book is already perfect.

The cover and title go well together. I can see benefits from reading this type of book. I like that it is designed to be read by 6 to 9 year olds. I have a grand daughter that age and would have checked into this book even if I were not part of this program. I read the first ten pages and enjoyed reading them . I continued and read the whole book. I like the way it was put together and thought it was appropriate for the target audience. I did not see anything that I would do to improve the book. I did not see any editorial errors in the book. I would presume that it was professionally edited.

The cover is so adorable and after reading the blurb, I definitely think this book has high educational value for kids. However, I personally wouldn't pick it up because I am not around any kids and I typically don't read children's books. After reading the first ten pages, I really enjoyed the artwork and how the birds are depicted. I think the premise of Priscilla refusing to share her words is so cute. I really think young kids and students would greatly get something out of this book and learn a lot. It's not for me but teachers and parents should definitely read it to kids.

From the cover, review, and description of this book, I probably wouldn't have picked it up. I'm very particular with the kids books that I read to my children. After reading the first 10 pages, I think I changed my mind. The images were excellent, the message was neat, and it was very well executed. I've already got my free copy and I've already finished reading it. The only thing I may have changed would have been some of the way the text accompanying the images were laid out. The official review did not affect my decision at all.

This looks adorable. I would love to flip through based on cover and title alone. I'm a sucker for a good kid's book. I did enjoy reading the OBC review; it gives a little more information on what to expect in the book versus just judging it by its cover. I really enjoyed reading the book. I think the author uses a tone that's more towards a text book than a children's book, but I still liked it. I found it very informative to those just learning about what types of words there are. I like that it has this information and I like that it includes a larger vocabulary because it is a great opportunity for kids to learn. I did not see any editorial issues. I will be reading the rest.

While I liked the ostrich in the cover page, I wasn't hugely interested in reading it. The OnlineBookClub review was very complementary and completely changed my mind. The fact that the illustrations were commented about got my attention, as well as the fact that it was teaching a range of vocabulary. The pages which I read were well written and edited. I liked the way that the new words were handwritten like a child would, this would help draw the reader in. I also liked how Priscilla didn't talk and was shy which a lot of kids could empathize with. I have no ideas for improvement and I continued on reading the book.

What a charming book! Had I not actually sampled the first ten percent as part of this program, I would not have picked up this book based on the genre because I'm not 6 years old and I don't know anyone who is in the target audience. However, the title caught my attention immediately and I found Priscilla to be a very relatable character. I, too, love to collect words but struggle to use them. Because of this, and because it was so short, I have already read the full book. The book looks beautiful, professionally done and professionally edited, and I did not see any grammatical errors. What I liked most about this book was that it ends with, "The Beginning." I think that's very fitting because of the way the story ends. If there was anything I could change about this book, it would just be that I want to read a print copy, because those are best for reading aloud and sharing pictures. I hope some day I will know a child who would appreciate this story like I do, so I can share it.

After reading a few pages of, The Word Collector by Evelyn Dunbar Webb, I have decided that I will finish reading this book. At first glance, this book looks like a fun children's story. If I had not read a sample of this book, I would have picked it up. I liked the cover for this book, and the blurb piqued my interest. When I learned that this book would be educational in more ways than one I was excited to read it. I like that Priscilla is a shy character, but that she loves words so much. The author does a fantastic job breaking down the different types of words. I think that this helps children better understand what each one is. I like that the font in this book is a decent size, I feel this makes the reading easier. Based on what I have read this book appears to be professionally edited. This book does have an official OnlineBookClub review. The reviewer speaks positively about this book, and this secures my interest. The fact that this book is appropriate for children my daughter's age inclines me to like this book a lot. I'm looking forward to reading this book and enjoying it with my 8-year-old.

I would have chosen to sample The Word Collector apart from First Ten as I enjoy reading children's books. I've mentioned this before, but reading children's books are one of my favorite pastimes ever. The blurb introduced me to a unique plot and the educational value of The Word Collector. I think the length of the story was pretty great - it wasn't too short or too long. The illustrations were nicely done, and according to the official OBC review, the illustrator paid great attention to detail. I liked how readers got to see Priscilla grow from a word hoarder to a word sharer. I think that will definitely inspire some kids to collect all kinds of words and share them too. In addition, I like how Evelyn Webb consistently referred to the many types of words. I feel like young readers will finish this book and have a grip on what types of words make up a language. This book seemed professionally edited, but I did notice one small error. In this sentence, "One day the mail carrier, Mrs. Thornblossom, brought...," there should be a comma between 'day' and 'the'.

I enjoy keeping up with new children’s books, and reviews of it seemed interesting. It is difficult to read only the first ten pages of a short picture book, but the illustrations were fun and the story clever. I liked the way the author wrote Priscilla’s new words on typical “penmanship paper” so kids could practice writing them, too. I do think the overall font of the story was a bit small, dwarfed by the pictures. For young readers this would make the book especially difficult to read independently. The OBC review was well-written and concise, and someone who was looking for a good children’s book would be moved to read this one based on the review. By the time I had read the review, I had already finished the book. The book itself was professionally edited, which is especially important in an educational book. I have already downloaded and read the entire book.

I probably would have read the sample for The Word Collector if it had not been a part of The First Ten program. The Book of the Day review made the book seem like a great read for children. The book seemed like it was professionally edited and I did not notice any errors while reading. I really enjoyed the illustrations and educational quality of the book. Based on the first ten pages, I don't see any room for improvement. As I am not a young reader nor do I have any young children, I am not going to read the rest of the book. However, I think that it would be a great read for younger children.

This book looked adorable and I was the BOTD program brought it to my attention. The OBC review was also very positive and it seemed like a lot of other members liked this book as well. The book is written in a simple and fun way that is great for children and I look forward to sharing this book with my daughters. I like that it's both educational and fun. I love the title and cover of this book. The cover is really cute and detailed, while the title is unique. I would not have picked it up because I do not have any kids. I enjoyed reading the first ten pages. They seem professionally edited. The illustrations are great. The words are simple. I liked that there were examples of each type of word. Overall, this seems like an awesome educational tool and if I had kids I would read it to them. The OBC review was favorable, but it did not have much affect on my opinion.

I have downloaded a copy of the book, and have read it. I am happy to report that I will also be sharing the book with my children! The book was written and edited very well, as I would expect from an educational book. The cover and title were interesting, but the first ten pages had me going! I enjoyed the English language context and the theme of collecting, rather than speaking, of words. You just cannot gain that understanding from the cover. The review was helpful as well, in realizing what the book is about, but there never really is a replacement for the first-hand experience. There is nothing I can offer as to improve upon. It was a delightful book, encompassing many needed topics needed in the early education of children.

The cover of Evelyn Dunbar Webb's book looks funny and attractive for children. The title reflects the topic described in the Amazon blurb. If I were a parent with a child of 6 to 11 years old, I would definitely be willing to purchase such a book that would help my son or daughter learning or reviewing grammar and vocabulary in an entertaining manner. From the writer's biography, she seems to have a lot of experience with either working or writing for children. Instead of the usual Amazon editorial reviews, I have read a 9-year-old praising opinion of the book. I found this aspect both refreshing and appealing. In addition, the customer reviews recommend the book to both parents and teachers and insist on its ethical and educational value. I must confess I am glad this program gave me the chance to check Evelyn Dunbar Webb's book since I think it is a book I could easily recommend to my family members and friends with kids who need to learn about parts of speech or enrich their vocabulary. I liked the illustrations and the clear storyline punctuated with funny situations or moral lessons. From the grocery to the library, Priscilla finds new opportunities to collect words which later fill her many notebooks. In time, her vast collection of words helps her make many friends. The book turned out to be so nice that I have read it to the last page. I think the author had an original idea of teaching children about the power of words in an exciting way. Kids will be as delighted as I was when Priscilla understands the importance of words and becomes a writer. I agree with the 4 star rating given by the OnlineBookClub reviewer especially since the book is professionally edited too. Once again, if I had a child this age, I would buy the book for him/her.

A fantastic, short children book on the transformation of
a character who collects lot of information but
not willing to express those to others! I really
enjoyed the illustrations in this picture book.
The presentation style is very good, and I found
the formatting perfect, with editing thoroughly
done. I didn't find anything specific that can
be improved upon in this book. I read the book
in full as it was available for free in Amazon.
The cover is nice, and the title is indicative of
what's in the book. But I still went ahead with
reading the book in full. I did see an OBC review
for the book, but my decision to read the book
was based on my own sampling.

Based on the cover and genre, I wouldn't have sampled the book unless I was specifically searching for a children's book. I read the official review and then sampled The Word Collector. I liked that it introduces the concept of nouns, verbs, adverbs, and adjectives in a story children will enjoy; I think it's a brilliant way for kids to learn. I did not see any errors in the pages I read. Because I think the book has a lot to offer, I will be reading the rest of it, so that I can recommend it to those I know have children that can benefit from it.

The title of this book grabbed me first. As a writer and language nerd, book titles having anything to do with language snag my attention. The blurb describes an absolutely adorable story. I may or may not have picked this up, but after reading a sample, I will read the rest of this book. I enjoy kid’s books, and I am curious to see where the author goes with this journey of learning words. As I would expect in a book about words, the writing is clean. I noticed no errors. It is also age-appropriate. There are a few bigger words, but they work well with the story’s educational nature. Priscilla, the ostrich main character, is my favorite part so far. She reminds me of the shy kid I was, and I see her as a relatable character for so many children. The official OnlineBookClub.org review I read only solidified my decision to read this book.

The title and cover of this one are awesome, I have no doubt I would've checked this out if I came across it. The idea of an ostrich collecting words like a hobby is fantastic!
As I went through the first twenty pages or so (I read way past where I had to, it was fun, don't judge me!) I really enjoyed the direction the author took with this. It's educational in that the ostrich explains the various types of words with good examples, but also funny with the ostrich hiding their head in the sand when they're talked to and not ever actually speaking words. The ostrich COLLECTS words rather than using them, so there's never any speaking from them. This is a really funny, creative twist.
The writing and art are both excellent, and the book is super cute. This is definitely something I'll finish (probably later today), and something I can recommend to anyone who has kids.

Everything about this book captured my attention: the title, cover art, onlinebookclub review, Amazon reviews, and synopsis. All of the above gave the impression of a fun, educational, and well-illustrated children's book. I immediately thought I would enjoy this book and wanted to read it. The sample did not disappoint me. Even as an adult with no kids, I absolutely loved what I saw. When I have kids, I would really like to have this book to read to them. It is well-written, the illustrations are beautiful, and I didn't note any typos. I will definitely finish it to find out if Priscilla decides to share her words.

The cover picture is cute. I'm not sure if the title font would have drawn me in. I do enjoy children's books so I may still have checked this one out without the first ten pages program. The Amazon blurb was good and the OBC review was very positive. They both added to my interest in the book. The story was very cute and informative. I wasn't so sure about the flow of text at the beginning but it improved as the book went on. The story was very good. I did not notice any obvious typos or grammar errors. The explanations and repetitions are well set up to help children understand the lessons intended. I am glad this book is free today and I enjoyed reading the story to the end.

I was going to read this book based on the professional art style of the cover and the educational focus of the book according to the blurb. The completely 5-star reviews also influenced my purchase. I was going to buy the whole book, and the first ten pages definitely convinced me to buy it. I knew that I wanted to try out a truly educational children's novel. This book does seem professionally edited and professionally drawn. The thing I liked the most was that the parts of speech were first introduced, and then examples were given. I also saw the Online Book Club review, and saw how positive it was, which convinced me to give this book a try.

As an adult with no children, I would not have been interested in this book. After reading the review, I thought it would be good for teachers. The first 10 pages took me maybe a minute to read. The illustrations is good quality and it seems very professional. It’s a cute book and I will finish it since it was free and is so short, but had it cost anything I would not have bought it since children’s books are not a big interest of mine.

What a delightful cover. It is visually appealing and looks very inviting. Even though it is not a book I need, nor does it fit into a genre that normally interests me, it is a book I would just have to pick up and examine in more depth. The blurb and review both talk about the benefits of this book for educational purposes and, if I was still in primary school, I would love a book such as this to complement my textbooks. The first ten were very enjoyable. I was captivated by the illustrations and found the four parts of speech were well described, with plenty of examples. I liked how the learning was blended into a story so it did not feel like learning. The other thing I particularly liked was that, not only did the book teach new words, it could also help with writing skills. I noticed the 'new words' were handwritten and placed within lines similar to the paper children learn to write letters and words on. This would give children a visual reminder of where letters fit on a line without drawing attention to it. I appeared professionally edited. While this book does not meet my needs, I intend to read the rest of the book. I want to do this for the pure enjoyment of the illustrations.

Based on the cover, genre and review, had I not read the first 10 pages, I would have read this book. I have 2 small children who loves learning and would thoroughly enjoy this book. Now that I have read this book, I know that I must share it with my little ones. It was fun, well-written and beautifully illustrated. I enjoyed reading it and I'm sure they will too. I didn't notice any typos or grammatical errors and there was an official OnlineBookClub review.

I wouldn't have sampled the book on my own, as I am not the intended audience. The cover is very sweet and the blurb gives a good sense of the tale. I love the concept of collecting and sharing words. Any book that teaches kids about the different types of words in a fun way is a good one in my book. The sample was rather short, but it appears to be well edited. The illustrations are adorable! As I am not part of the intended audience, I won't read the book. I will recommend it to others, though. The OBC review didn't sway my decision either way.

Total ~ 68%
The Word Collector earned a score of 68%.
In other words, out of the top-level reviewers who read at least the first 10 pages of this book, 68% plan to read the whole book.
IMPORTANT: Any score over 10% is considered very good. And any score above 0% is acceptable.
Over a million books are published each year. Any given person could not even read .0001% of the books out there. This means readers have to be very selective. Even taking the time to look over reviews and blurbs, let alone read samples, is more time than most readers can afford for most books. The First Ten is a powerful focus group that addresses those issues. It creates a helpful tool for authors, publishers, and other readers.
