1) It keeps my mind engaged

2) I can use my imagination instead of relying on already-laid-out visual representation

3) Increases my vocabulary

In addition to that last point (made a few years ago), I like reading books translated into English from other cultures, because the illustrations and story sequences differ. Some use space in unique ways - some have very short, bare sentences.

It allows me to mentally escape the mundane/chaos of everyday life into a new world, which I find relaxing.
