Re: Why Reading Romance Novels Makes Women Smarter

Not sure why you would specify romance novels but I think the reading of any book no matter the genre or level of difficulty increases intelligence and cognitive thinking. Romance, Historical, Science Fiction, it doesn't matter.

The genre has nothing to do with making you smarter. It is just a good practice to read. You learn things when reading but another fact that everyone should know..... Reading helps to ward off Alzheimers!! Keeps the brain active. You have to exercise it like any other muscle in the body. So keep reading everyone. You are taking care of your mind!

I agree it us reading itself not the genre. While we are at it we have to include men. Reading anything makes PEOPLE smarter. Actually it us proven to ward off Alzheimer's so keep reading everyone!

d0dridge wrote:I could be really cynical and say it makes woman smarter because they read the 'romance' and realise its an unrealistic dream and decide to kick ass at everything else...

Maybe there is something motivational about reading about female characters who are able to embark on a romance successfully. In which case maybe the characters themselves are inspirational.

Just speculating.
I totally agree with that! Women may know that some dreams are unrealistic, and though they still dream about them, they make sure that they do everything else to achieve the other dreams that they have.

I am curious to know where this "fact" about romance novels making women smarter came from. Was there a study done on the matter? I'll have to google this, just to satisfy my curiosity. What I'm about to say has been posted mulitple times in this thread, but it bears repeating: reading in general will make anybody smarter, and I doubt seriously that it has anything to do with a particular genre.

I'm with Sandie on this, I work with women who primarily prefer erotica or Nicholas Sparks romance novels. However, I am a woman who prefers to read sci fi and fantasy.
My perspective, is that reading whatever genre you personally find enjoyable, is beneficial to your mind.

How about maybe a woman has worked all day and needs to unwind? This could be her stress-breaker? Which leads to more productivity.
