Sometimes. Especially if there is a picture of a person on the cover of a book. Sometimes if a character reminds me of a person, then that's how I'll picture them.

Only if I have seen the movie first, which I like to do, not because I can picture the characters, but because I hate being disappointed in movies. Usually I still enjoy the movie if I watch it first and then read the book. Although that did not happen with "Eragon". That movie was "loosely" based on the book :)

Only if I am reading a book, I have already seen the movie, or TV show based on whatever book. Otherwise, I basically see the characters how they are described by the author.

This only happens to me rarely, when I have seen the movie before I have read the book. I always try to read the book first when I can!

Yes :(
That is why I always want to read the book before I see the movie.. which doesn't always happen.

I think we are all guilty of that. Loved your response.

I do that ALL the time. It just helps to get a visual of the characters I am reading about and makes it all the more real.

I don't normally picture actors, but characters my mind makes up. If there is an actor that fits the author's description, though, and I start to picture that, I can't get said actor out of my mind as the character!

No, I don't think I've ever felt an urge to cast actors in roles while I'm reading but if I've seen or heard an interview with an author I have a tendency to picture him/her as a character in their book or I find myself thinking "wouldn't have expected him/her to write that".
Hence I prefer to read books knowing nothing about the author not even gender (sometimes, of course, gender is obvious from the name).

I do. I have always had the image of Tom Selleck as the lead character of Jim Qwilleran in The Cat Who books. My wife started reading the books too and she asked me, "Does Jim Qwilleran remind you of an actor?" I said, "Tom Selleck, right?" She said, "Exactly!" So I think that's probably a a pretty common connection in those particular books.

It makes you wonder if the author had an actor in mind when they wrote a story.
