Because it's a pleasant way of spending time.
Plus I get to know a lot about world and people from books. I can "visit" existing and non-existent places (I really feel like I'm in a described place sometimes, my imagination works good thanks to books :) ). I like words and seeing what an author can do with them. It's a great way to learn/improve foreign language. When I read in a train I don't need to look at people sitting opposite and I don't get bored. And I have reading in genes

I like reading because it's relaxing. it's an escape from the cold realities of life, from TV, and from your own problems. It embraces your mind with untold knowledge and is far more visual than film. While I'm reading, it's for my eyes only, and imagination knows no bounds.

Personally, reading is my escape from reality. I have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and with that comes a lot of difficulties and challenges that no one should ever have to face. When I read, I get to become someone other than myself. With that I get to forget what is happening in real life and pretend my life isn't what it is.

Another great aspect of reading is getting to see another person's perspective on life in general. Even fictional stories can tell us so much about the author.

I love reading because thru books I can visit any place in the world, reading gives me such a creative way of enjoying life. I could actually sit and read all day long. I have read and collected books for as long as I remember. Reading is truly a very BIG aspect of my life. :D

I like reading because it is the best companion I can ever have, always gives something but never expects anything from me. I don't consider it as a hobby but as a essential activity.

I like reading because, once you get drawn into the story it is like you are there, not reading words but seeing what is happening. If a book goes into enough detail that you can actually envision what it would look like, then it's like a movie in your mind. At least that is how I see it. I can get lost in a good book, almost feel like the characters are people you actually know, does anyone else feel this way?

A friend suggested I read way too much and should get myself a dog!

But reading is better than owning a dog ... you don't have to walk a book, feed it, groom it, clean up after it, train it, take it to the vet, get a booksitter if you are going on holiday. You can take it into a hospital, church, museum, gallery, cinema, pub, restaurant, stately home or suburban semi, woodland, countryside, beach, on a plane, train or anyother mode of transport without question or even referring to it. You don't have to apologise for it or talk to it (unless you want to, of course) and it will never, ever argue with you, forget you, ignore you, get sick, run away or DIE on you!

Also, your house can be crammed with books and nobody is going to send the guys in the white coats or the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Books.

And that, folks, is why I will not be getting a dog.

My story may be a bit unusual. My mother was illiterate. So there were no bedtime stories no story time, etc. This has bothered me through adulthood, that I didn't teach her. I was introduced to books by my cousin who lived upstairs. He took me to the local library and stationed me in the children's section. It was as if I had been put in a special room full of glorious things. I chose some books and had them read by the end of the first day. This continued for as long as we lived in the same house. When I got older I would go to the library on my own. I know that reading is important. Therefore I volunteer my time to help school age children and adults who are non native English speakers to read and love it. A beautiful moment happened several months ago when I went to the house of a girl from Iran (I was tutoring her) who liked playing video games more than reading. She was sitting on the couch reading one of the books I had gotten her from the library. My student now is from Saudi Arabia and is a much harder nut to crack. He told me he liked Sponge Bob. So I got him a book about the character. No success. I haven't given up hope. One day I'll find the key that will open the door to books for him. As for myself, I mostly enjoy biographies and memoirs. Right now I'm reading "Babyville" by Jane Green. It's a fun read. Not too heavy. Great for reading in bed. But I try to read a variety of books and am in 2 book clubs. I love to read because it takes me out of my everyday life which is not always pleasant. I can't imagine not being in the middle of a book.

My reasons are so similar to what has already been mentioned. I love the escaping to another world and possibly time. I love the feeling of how a book relaxes me and I have that quiet time just for me to get absorbed into a wonderful story. It is fabulous to experience how the various authors write their stories and their style of writing.

A good book and a lovely hot cup of tea in a quiet space.....perfect on a cold winter night.

I like to read because no matter what mood I am in I can get lost in another world.
