Reading has always been a way to escape for me. I remember being a little girl in school and my teacher would always say that books "take you another world, if you allow them to" and that always rang true for me. Story telling is an art and I love an author’s ability to create life with a simple sentence. The smallest sentence or phrase can hold so much nuance and it’s all very beautiful for me.

leslie.aponte wrote: 17 Oct 2007, 21:31 I love reading beacuse:

1) It helps me stop thinking about bad things. Like when I'm upset or very very mad, I grab a book and that just makes me forget about everything. It is a way of escaping reality.

2) English is not my first language, so it makes me learn grammar and just new words. For some weird reason I love to learn.

3) I love the different situations, people and places you can imagine while you read, or at least I, it makes it so much better than a movie.
I was born in the Philippines, and my family had always made it a point to teach us English at a very young age. We've always had books from the start, and when I was young (up until now, I guess), I expanded my vocabulary by learning a lot of new words from books I read. Everytime I encountered a new word, I'd always look it up in a dictionary and memorize it. Later on I won several Spelling Bees because I was so familiar with many words.
I completely understand how reading teaches you grammar and vocabulary, especially if English is not your first language. It's never weird to always want to be learning. It's how we all grow. I think it's weirder if you have no interest in learning

It helps me to see things from a different perspective. I love a book that makes me think and shows me things from other people's perspectives.

I like reading because it lets me escape from reality. When I read, I see the story in my head. I feel my imagination is much better than Hollywood. I love reading because it not only teaches me things, but it helps me to feel like I am not alone. Which is why I am so glad I found this site. Reading is my safe place...my soft place to land. Depending on the book, reading can encourage me, sadden me, make me love myself, make me hate someone (fictional, of course), make me feel good or angry or many other emotions. Reading is like life, without the consequences.

It is comforting to see that as a community, we can connect not just over books but why we read books. Books has always been an escape for me. I tend to prefer fictional or historical books. Everything exists in our imagination and with word, another detail is added. It is a beautiful thing, and books really take you to another portal. It is simply a magical experience.

I read because...

Books have the ability to transport our minds into new worlds, both in the imaginary and realistic sense, and it's a marvelous feeling to sometimes dissapear into someone else's world and maybe even see the world from a character's lense.

Books are my inspiration as a writer. It is the books I grew up with which have shaped me to become the writer I am today.

Books are endless. I take pleasure in its everlasting reliability. I finish one, I start another....then another...

The pleasure of reading is why I am here, why I live and breathe to write and it will be the comfort of my life forever.

I love to ready. As a child my mother made us read 100 pages a day. We did not select the books, she did. As a result I enjoy reading a wide array of subjects. I love books that take you away to another time and those that make use of my imagination. I enjoy historical romances. I like mysteries. I will read anything except for horror.

It is a way to escape and go into another world where I can take on the role of someone else or even multiple people. As a fellow writer reading also gives me inspiration for new ideas for new written work or how to improve on past written work. From time to time, I learn new words or phrases to use in my everyday life.

For me, reading serves several purposes.

1. It brings me to worlds I might never see in my life.
2. It helps me escape from my reality.
3. I love how the different situations posited in the stories can help me widen the scope of my imagination.

and moreee....

Reading can open doors to fictional worlds, to the minds and thoughts of writers. The writer has full control when writing but when given to the readers, the readers have the ability to interpret and fill in the blanks. Reading is a form of communication I can't help but adore. Being able to create and share life with words, it's a wonderful thing.

Wow, what a question. I don’t know if I’ve ever sat down and really thought about the answer to this question. I guess the simple answer is that I like the escape. I get extremely involved with books that I read. I feel as though I am a part of the story, especially if a great author wrote it. Some books leave me so moved that I have to take a small break before beginning another. I almost feel as though I can’t get over the story.
