I'm with you - fanfics for books seems offlimits somehow, as though the original author has already claimed the written word for that particular universe.

TV, on the other hand... I used to read so much fanfiction, but it seemed that the uncharacteristic slash fics started to take over (slash being the erotic pairing of two male characters, usually sworn enemies), and it got harder to find the well-written fics that actually fit the world they were borrowing from. Or maybe I'm stuck on the wrong website :)

I like the idea that Amazon is lending some credibility to the hobby, and legally allowing writers to take advantage, but I can also see why some writers (Robin Hobb is a good example) get really defensive about characters and worlds they've invested so much time into creating.

Fan fiction is something you can find on a lot of e-book community sites. Some of there authors are very young, and surprisingly VERY talented for such a young age. I do read them on occasion, but I must say that if I have read the original story I typically do not care for the fan fiction. I feel that it is taking away from the initial writer who came up with the plot. With thtat being said. I do think some are extremely good, and a great way for young writers to start writing. Like I mentioned before; some of these young authors are very good at creating a whole different world for a set of characters.I am not a fan of fan faction that portrays popular band members as the ultimate characters.

I'm not overly into fanfiction but if I really love the series and don't want it to end I will read fanfiction on it.

I know that some people don't like fanfic because they don't like the idea of people using other people's characters and I was wondering how people felt about it.

Personally, if I really enjoy a book (or a film) then the first thing I do is go out and try and find fanfic about it.
I have never read fanfic, but I would. I think it is a great way of getting the creative juices flowing.

I HATE!!!!! It when fan fictions aren't written well. I'd respect a fan fiction written like a novel would be, but and not a: "this happened, then this happened, and here's my favourite colour" kind of story .

I am neutral about fan fiction, but I don't like it when there is too much of it for one book. :)

Fan fiction is another favourite past time of mine, right next to reading novels. I'm constantly surprised by the talents you can find online (as appalled as I am at finding people who write using textspeak) and I doubt I'm ever going to stop reading fan fiction. It's as likely as I am to stop reading novels - that is to say: not bloody likely. I am, however, struggling to find a balance within the two so I don't spend too much time on one such that I have no time for the other.

I've read fanfiction and have written it once or twice when I was younger, but I tend to find it less enjoyable than the original book. Many times the fanfiction is badly written or out of character, and to me that takes away from a good book. While I have found some truly good fanfictions, I tend to feel that if you have the talent, you should be writing your own stories. I also feel that there should be some way of consulting the author on whether they would like there to be fanfiction or not, as someone pointed out that Anne Rice for example does not wish her works to be written about. Despite disclaimers in the fanfiction, they are still using someone else's intellectual property, and that person should have a say in what is posted using their characters and ideas.

I haven't actually read any before but have been thinking about reading some Glee fanfiction in the summer between seasons as I miss it when it's not on TV.

I'm sure that somewhere out there someone has written some really good fan fic... I just havent found it... most of the fan fic that I have read totally distorts the characters the author created and makes them something different... Every author has his or her own voice... so if you have more than one author using the characters it just makes thing confusing

Personally I love fanfiction.

You know when you've finished a series and you just want to keep reading about the characters? Fanfiction does that, it puts them through all sorts of scenarios, there are ones that have the 'what ifs'. I think it's great, and while some isn't very good many of them are because the writer themself is going through their own story.

It's also great as a writer. You can gets tons of practice writing, and tips from other writers. Also it helps with character building or if you have an idea but don't have a world to place it in.
Crap happens; it's inevitable, it's a part of life. You can't let it destroy though, you learn to be stronger and wiser through the crappy things that happen.

I have never bothered with fan fiction so I can't really say anything about it.
