Vertically on one of my shelves are all my fiction books and the non-fiction ones that tend to be too large to fit vertically are placed horizontally on another shelf.

Both. They're sort of all over the place. My bookshelves are the one thing that I don't keep very well organized.

I'd love to say that I have beautifully arranged shelves with larger books placed horizontally and displayed nicely stacked and with all other books standing vertically, arranged by color or author or who I think would like to sit next to each other during dinner. The reality is that I have books shoved in every nook and cranny. It's lucky if they even make it to the shelf! There are piles on the floor, boxes in the closet, stacks on and under the desk, and there's always one or two that seems to end up under the bed or sofa somewhere.

My book shelf is normally very neatly organised, with books vertically in height order, but since I currently have so many books on the shelf they are now all piled on top of each other horizontally to fit them all in! Think I need a bigger shelf! Or a whole library! :D

That's a good question. Vertical.

Vertically. but otherwise the order is pretty random. For some reason, I have more female authors than males, but that's cool.

Normally I would put all the books together with other books of the same size vertically, and the stack other books on top if I ran out of room. But now I have been storing them in special plastic boxes to keep them dust free in my small apartment, then I can stack them up in the corner or in the closet and clear up lots of space on my minimal shelves.

Vertically in alphabetical order of course. Fiction first and then nonfiction. I do keep author's and their works together by publication date as well.

Vertically and by author. I have two book cases: one tall thin one, and one short wide one. The former contains books from a particular group of letters and the latter all the rest. I'm getting a new one, though. One that touches the ceiling and is as wide enough to cover the wall, which is about six feet wide. It'll look awesome! :D

Mine are vertical and disorganized with no aesthetic qualities whatsoever.

The majority of my books are vertical and in alphabetical order. Some, however, are horizontal and not in alphabetical order because they are too tall for my book shelf.

Well, some of my shelves are too short for my books. When that happens, I place them horizontally. Other than that, mine are placed vertically. I don't have an organized way of doing it by genre or author or color because I simply don't have the patience yet... But I hope I will eventually.

I know someone who puts their books spine side I ward, so the pages are facing out. It makes all the booms looks the "same" or something.

Definitely vertically. Otherwise I would absolutely need to read a book on the bottom of a stack and make a huge mess.
