In my early 20s.

Actually I don't really read novels before. What "made" me read was because I felt inferior when I am compared with my younger sister who reads.

By the way, I started reading at the age of 18....

I was very young when I found my love for books. I was an only child growing up so books were my companion. So probably at the age of 5 (when I first learned how to read) I would take my little easy to read books and read them under my old oak tree.

I would read things now and then as a young child (a couple of Roald Dahl's books here and there amongst other things) but I never really appreciated reading until secondary school when I had to read Of Mice and Men, which I didn't really like. So I was offered an alternative: The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, and I am so glad I took it. That book was one of a few that really got me into reading, and afterwards I devoured every other book I had. Reading is addictive and each time you need a stronger dose to satisfy. Now I'm just completely dependent and beyond rehabilitation.

When I was three I had only one book. It was "Henny Penny the Little Red Hen". I made my mother read it to me so many times that I could sit and recite the book from memory. Since I also remembered when to turn pages, my mother was convinced I was reading.

After that, I enjoyed reading until the fourth grade. We had to stand and read out loud and I mispronounce the word corps. The teacher laughed so everyone in the room laughed. I sat down. The teacher, still laughing, told me stand up and continue reading. I refused. The principal told me I had to. I refused. They called my father who said, "If you can make the little bastard do something he says he won't do, more power to you. I can't."

So, I didn't read for about a year. Then my mother joined a group to stamp out smut in school libraries. I wasn't real clear on what smut was but it sounded interesting so I got her list of smutty books and started reading again. I never found smut but I did find that reading books you want to read is a lot more fun than reading books you're ordered to read.

I've never quit reading since then.

I honestly don't remember. Sometimes I think I just sprang into being with a love for reading. :)

I think it was my middle school years - so about 12 years old. I remember reading the Little House series and Are You There God, It's Me Margaret - oh my gosh, make me laugh...

I think I was 6 or 7. I know it was as soon as I got out of kindergarten. I remember loathing books in kindergarten because my teacher would keep telling me to put my finger under the word I was reading, and I had to slug through a book without a story... Then My dad started reading fantasy books out loud to me such as The Cronicles of Narnia and A Wind in the Door, and I think that's when I started realizing that books were fun, not a tedious task that I was "forced" to do

I was actually much older when I found my love for reading. I was a good reader growing up and as such all of my English classes had very heavy required reading lists. I found that some I liked and some I did not. It was not until I was in college and actually had a bit of free time to read a book of my own choosing, that I got hooked! Now I can't imagine life not being surrounded by wonderful books. I have children of my own and taking a cue from my own childhood, I am helping them choose books to read for fun that they are not required to read for school. We even have our own "Mommy and Me" bookclub; we read a book together and then go out on a date to discuss it. I am hoping this helps them find the love of reading earlier than I did :)

As long as I can remember I've loved to read! Always read in the car on road trips and had books with me at the beach. A great way to build imagination and knowledge.

I was 6 years old. That's the age when I learned to read chapter books and I have loved reading ever since I learned how, and look where I am today
