My books are all vertical and I have never even tried putting them horizontal so I do not really have an opinion on that. If they are a series I put them in the order of the series. That is the only type of order I use though.

I arrange mine vertically, in different genres, and alphabetically according to the authors. Then I arrange it by the order of the series. I get a thrill each time I spend time arranging and cataloging.

I put every book from an author together in chronological order if it is a series, and I put authors together by genre. For instance I have all of my Stephen King and Dean Koontz books on the same shelf.

I just moved, and I am so excited! I have four book cases, and I'm going to do each one differently. One book case will be organized in a rainbow color, one will be a black and white checkerboard pattern, one will be collectibles, including old books and autographed copies, mixed in with my owl collection, and the fourth will be boring academic texts and probably some trinket things to jazz it up a little.

I mostly place them vertically with a few exceptions for books to big to fit vertically. I also try to organize them by color because I like the way it looks.

Well, they started out all being vertical, but now a lot of the overflow books are laying horizontally. That is simply because I'm out of space though.

I have mine vertically and in alphabetical order. Before my husband and I moved in together I had them seperated by genre and alphabetical. Then he moved in and brought a ton of books with him :D and he decided it was easier to find the book he was looking for if the books were in one place and just alphabetized. I miss my way. :(

I place my books vertically on my bookshelves. I try to keep books in order of the last name of the author, but sometimes I get a bit lazy. This post definitely makes me want to fix all of my out of place books!

<---check out my profile picture! I just reorganized my bookshelves! This is the first one. I did a rainbow color scheme. On the second book case, I did a black and white checkerboard pattern. The third and fourth book cases are still waiting to be attended to!
