The last book I read is Written in my own Hearts Blood by Diana Gabaldon. It is the 8th book of her Outlander series. The characters are so real that they become like family. This historical adventure takes the reader from England to Scotland during the Rising if the 1700s, to Paris and on to the American revolution. It's so well researched and exciting you can't wait for the next book to come out. The books are massive at 800 to over 900 pages and it usually takes 2 years or more for the next book to come out but, it's well worth the wait. I am still waiting for the last book of the series. Every year around Christmas I start reading the series again hoping the next book will hit the shelves. Outlander was the 1st book on Ophra's book club and it's a #1 read all the way.

I am currently reading "Throne of Glass" by Sarah J. Mass. I definitely give it a 10! It includes the every aspect of fantasy anyone could desire, a tad of romance, and the influential main protagonist that always has something snarky to display.

The last book I finished reading was Mirror in the Sky by Aditi Khorana, and I would rate it four out of five stars. It was great with the many existential questions that were posed and never completely answered, but some of the teenage drama within it took a little out of the seriousness of the overall novel.

Two books finished in the past day or so.

By the bedside,Family Life by Akhil Sharma, winner of the 2016 IMPAC Dublin literary award.

Written in simple, clipped prose, it is the story of the Mishra family, who migrate from Delhi to New York in search of a more prosperous life. As the family gradually adapts to a new rhythm of life, which, as for most migrant families combines the old ways and the new ways, tragedy strikes their older son Birju.

Sharma's style is to combine pathos and humour, using brief and concise sentences and minimalist approach to detail. But the ending was bizarre - Sharma clearly ran out of ideas and patience. Still worth 4 stars out of 5.

On kindle, Vendetta by Michael Dibdin, which is the second in his series featuring Italian detective Aurelio Zen.

In this instance, Zen is called in to investigate the seemingly impossible murder of a wealthy man, his wife and guests in a seemingly impregnable fortress of a mansion in Sardinia.

Ultimately, it was fairly pedestrian crime fiction, sometimes muddled and lacking flow, as well as the problems of credibility so common in this genre of fiction.

3.5 stars out of 5
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

Good Omens - Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett

5/5

Fun and entertaining. The two protagonists are magnificently constructed, as well as all the others in the novel. The story is just so happy and lighthearted it will surely brighten your day.

The last book I read was The Book Of Hidden Things by Francesco Dimitri. I would give it 4 stars.
To be honest, it was a great read. To give you a bit of backstory, the book is entirely based in southern Italy and revolves around a group of old friends who have a pact to meet up in their hometown. However one of the friends does not show up and the plot is based around uncovering the mystery behind the disappearance of the fourth friend. The thing I liked most about the book was the constant suspense of whether there was a supernatural element involved in the story, and that answer is still not wholly answered by the end. I'm usually not a fan cliff hangers but this was a pretty good ending. In terms of the actual writing, I loved the differing point of views between the characters and the dramatic irony laced throughout. Flashbacks were written effectively as well so that they didn't feel forced. The book flowed well and showed a great history of the location. My only criticism was that the end event seemed a little weak. There had been a large buildup to this event yet it lacked dramatic emphasis. Still a good read overall.
