I actually saw a red fern this past summer, and I honestly burst into tears. I initially read this in 6th grade with the class and everyone was crying, even the boys, in the last few chapters.
My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George
I hated it at first and I mean hated it, but as we continued reading it sort of became magical to me.
Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell
I love love this book, at first I was wary, because at the time I though Dolphins were stupid (I was a bit of a tomboy) and thought the whole book was going to be about them, and it really isn't. This is a must read. I remembered when my dog chewed up my original copy, I wanted to cry, but my Mum bought me a new one.
