I've never burnt a book. If I no longer want one, I give it to the Salvation Army or Goodwill.

The thought of burning a book makes me cringe. It reminds me of Nazis, how they made those enormous stacks of "forbidden" books and had large book-burning ceremonies. It's too symbolic to me- like burning words, like censorship. Even if I despise a book, I would never burn it because in a way I respect all books even if I hate them. I HAVE considered burning my old copies of Twilight, since they took up an entire foot of bookshelf space and I have such a hatred of that series, like it's an insult to literature. But I would never actually burn it. I gave those books to a friend of mine, but warned her about their evilness beforehand.
I feel like burning a book would be the equivalent of torturing a small animal such as a mouse.
Though I have to admit that my friends and I often speak wistfully about the end of school and talk about having a symbolic math notebook burning to relieve all our pain. Because, of course, math notebooks are records of torture and there is no reason to keep them.

I have never burned a book. I did rip the pages out of one to use for something or the other, but I don't remember what that was. The only censorship I ever experienced was a redacted Ice Castles. As my older sister read it, she used a marker to black out the cuss words.

I didn't burn but I cut up into tiny peices a diary of mine that I found one of my siblings reading. The rage I felt!

No I would never purposely burn a book. I would give it away, donate, or something like that if I didn't want it anymore.

Why would you do that?! I agree that one should be careful of book and whats in them for words have the power to change us(Yes, I just quoted Tessa from Clokwork angel) but BURNING them?! really ? Also it reminds of the scene from The Book Thief where the Nazis burned books that were not agreeable to them but this shows how we shouldn't try to control what people should read and what they shouldn't. This is just dominating your ideologies over others'.

I have wanted to from how much I have hated a book, but I never do.

obiebookworm wrote:Yes I have! Of course, this was many years before recycling. Though I believe in freedom to read, there's a different in my mind between what happens in a library and my personal collection. In the book burning case, I remember having a few books that I felt were not worth passing on to someone else because they had the high potential of hurting someone else, like it did me.

Bottom line, if there is a book in my possession (most likely one given to me) that has the potential of creating harm to another, it gets trashed.

I'm curious as to what type of books they were?

I've never burned a book in my life. Perhaps if we have a decline in society maybe a few boring ones might be burned however I love all of my books too much to burn them.

My husband and I decided to burn a small book (some might argue a large pamphlet) once because it had some very hateful material in it. It was religious propaganda that made its way into our community. I don't really want to go into details, but it gave both of us the creeps and we felt that it had the potential to be really harmful to others.
