That is an excellent idea when you get books that for one reason or another have become unreadable due to weather, water, mold, or heaven forbid, the neighbor's cat. I would bet that they would last fairly long too since I use shredded newspaper to start the fire in the fireplace. I have thrown books away--generally books that are deeply hurtful in nature. If I don't like a book but figure that someone else will, I add it to my donation collection for Sheltering Books in GA. If it were something of a personal nature that I wanted to destroy, I'd shred it.
