Honestly. I don't see the harm in it. I read them growing up so I may be biased but if I was allowed to read it at a younger age them why not let my own children enjoy them?

I don't understand why someone shouldn't let their kids read Harry Potter. There is nothing wrong with the books. They are really harmless. I got the first book when I was really young. It was a gift from my mother. Especially nowadays that there are so many books that can be thought "dangerous" for kids, I think that the Harry Potter series is a really series for kids to read.

My daughter has read them all (she was never a really big reader) and has even gone on to read other books/authors similar, so actually I owe Harry a big thank you! That being said, one of her good friends isn't allowed to read any of them, or anything that has to do with magic, witches ,hauntings, or anything similar. Nor can she watch anything on tv with those subject matters.

I don't see the harm in it. My mom let me read it and I turned out fine.

Then again, my mother insisted that she could fly as a kid, no joke.

I have read and the loved the series and my daughter loved it as well. Beyond me how some people can see the series as evil. It is just a story, a great one for sure, but without any hidden meaning.

I can't imagine any objection to any of the books in the Harry Potter series for children. I encourage kids to read anything, just read!
I did think Cracker Jackson was a little heavy for my third grader, but it was on the accelerated reading list at her school. I guess whoever approved it for the list thought kids need to know about unattended children, domestic abuse and neglect. I complained about it not being age appropriate at the school and I could tell that neither the teacher nor the librarian had read the book. Of course my daughter had already read the book. She turned out ok so hopefully no lasting damage. BTW she adores all things Harry Potter!

I would let my girls read it if they were interested. It's good to let them use their imagination in a fantasy land

The series is very imaginative and encourages kids to be imaginative as well so I don't see why parents don't approve of it. Their excuses are mostly religion-based, I've noticed.

I don't see anything wrong or inappropriate with the book. I guess it's up to the parents, they should know what their kids can handle.

No matter what book, movie, tv prog you pick there will be parents who disapprove of it - that's the nature of people.

Fran, absolutely i totally agree...

Gali, i was just curious cause i heard of some negative viewpoints re the book...personally i'm way past the " target " market age wise, so i can't comment on the book having never read it.......( it's not my genre either )

if i had little kids tho, i'd certainly check the book out as i always did back then BEFORE they'd be allowed to read it...

I think that if the child is interested in reading the Harry Potter books and the parent doesn't feel the child is ready for the books, then they should read them together. The books are very well written and allow for much discussion, so it is a great way for a parent to monitor their child's reactions and to see if they are ready for all of the books.
