How long do you wait before starting a new book?

Post by M-Allmon »

How long after finishing a book do you wait before starting another one? For me it depends on if I liked the book or not. If I really enjoyed the book then I will try to find another book almost immediately. If I didn't like the book then I'll usually wait a few days before trying to find another book. It's like the bad book puts me in a funk!

Pretty much as soon as I have finished one book, I have another one to start. I am usually reading more than one book at a time, so when I finish one, I'll try to get the other one that I'm reading finished before I pick up another one. But I am always on the lookout for another book. I rarely wait more than a day or two before I start another book.

I always have a stack of books waiting; sometimes it's as soon as putting down the one I've finished and picking up the next one I want to read. More commonly, I'll finish a book on my way to bed and so start a new one the next morning, or finish reading a book during a meal and wait until after work/evening activities to start another.

On a few rare occasions, a book affects me so strongly that I have a literary hangover and cannot go straight to the next book, because I need time to recover - some of Dennis Lehane's books, for example.

I don't start a book the same day I finish the previous one.

Sometimes the next day or a few days later - depending how busy I am at work, things like that, rather than anything to do with the actual book.

I will typically wait either a few hours or a day. It really depends on how the book before ended. If I was so wrapped up in the story that it takes time to adjust back to reality, to stop thinking so much about the story, the people's lives and contemplating how things could have gone differently, then it will take me at least a day before I can start another book.

I generally can start one immediately but I have other things to do then just put it off for a few days because I cannot do justice to the book otherwise because till you get a hang of the characters I think it's best to keep reading .

I hate not having nothing to read. I will immediately find a new book after finishing the last one. Even though I prefer real books versus the ereaders, that is the one advantage an ereader has. With my ereader, I have a new book to read immediately.

I'm usually reading 4 or 5 books at once, so there really is no gap between books.

I usually start a new one right away, but If I enjoyed a book a lot, sometimes it's hard to shift gears and get into a new book. It's hard to let go of the other book.

Wait???? No waiting, I normally can't wait to start my next adventure... although I must admit after finishing the Bronze Horsemen trilogy, I did have to have a break, to recap... and I found it took me awhile to get back into reading about different characters again.

Unless a book has really upset me I move directly on to the next book - so normally maybe an hour or so between books.
But some books, e.g. The Kindly Ones, upset me so much that I had to give my mind a chance to come to terms with the content - I think it took a couple of days. Thinking about it now that book still upsets me, powerful writing.
