Why do YOU read?

Post by fari30 »

I was wondering this, and well, “Why do we like to read?” I think of reading as my way of escaping the real world and forget about the problems in my life, if for a little while. Reading has also improved my writing greatly, and I just love to know how other people think and I love to compare what I would’ve done in a situation with what the character had done.
Why do you like to read books? And what is it about reading, itself, that makes you want to read?

It depends on what I'm reading. If I'm reading anime it's for my enjoyment. If I'm reading something more americanized than it could be to stimulate my brain cells and build my vocab more.

I read because:
1. Its fun
2. It always me to experience new places and worlds
3. It has helped me through some tough times in my life
4. It is one constant I have always had
5. I love to meet new characters and have new adventures through reading.

Sometimes I choose books to read because they will open new ways of looking at the world, teach me something new, or in other ways edify me, but when it really comes down to it, reading is just a hobby I enjoy. I read for fun.

I love losing myself in worlds of fantasy. I love learning, whether it is new words or concepts. Thus, I consider myself open to a variety of genres, fiction and non fiction. Books can express thoughts and ideas that cannot otherwise be communicated in cinema. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but very few can say a thousand words about a simple picture.

Good points. I do like to explore different cultures and see life through different eyes and reading provides that opportunity. At the end of the day though, I just love to read; it's my favorite hobby.

Fiction is purely an escape. But I read a lot of nonfiction, because I'm a geek. Love to learn about physics, history, archaeology, ethology.

I read because it makes me happy and helps me forget the stress that comes my way and right now there is plenty of that! Reading is my escape and my way to unwind and relax.

Most of the reading I do is to learn something as I primarily read non fiction. My kids have been a great inspiration for me to read non fiction as well though. They know I love to read and will often recommend their favorite books to me. I enjoy reading them in part because it gives me a glimpse into what my kids enjoy and in part because it gives me another avenue to connect with my kids. Reading their favorite books also helps me see the joy of reading just for the pleasure of it (versus to learn something new.)

I read to learn. I read to improve. I read to escape. I read to pass time. I read because I love it. I read because it tickles my imagination.
