Do you feel it is rude to interrupt someone while reading?

Post by cbmatte07 »

This forum is inspired by another discussing whether reading can be rude.
Under certain instances a reader may seem rude depending on the approach.
But what about vice versa?
I personally get incredibly annoyed when I am deep in a good book and someone interrupts, especially mid sentence, mid paragraph or mid page. Especially for a ridiculous reason.
When I am at my desk at work with my nose in a book, it is usually a good sign I am not looking for company or conversation.
Or if I'm nestled into the corner of my couch while my husband watches TV or is on his phone and interrupts to show me a picture or video of something irrelevant.
I need a sign that says: "Do Not Interrupt-Reading in Session" or "Approach with Caution". Unless it is an emergency, I would rather read.
What other frustrations may a reader come across?

Yes I do think it is rude. Rather like butting in on a conversation.

Does your hubby interrupt your reading for 'cute grumpy cat pics?

Yes, I think it is rude in some cases.

I often get sucked into the world of the book I'm in and when I'm jolted out of it or dragged out I'm grumpy and grouchy. So if my boyfriend pulls me out in order to show me a picture or talk about what he did on the computer, I'm going to be grumpy. More often than not though, it's to talk about what's for dinner, plans for the next day or when he mother is coming to visit - the important stuff and usually it's pretty quick discussions. This doesn't happen often anymore though, I've learned to read when he's at work and put the bookmark in place when he gets home.

Yes, it's very rude. You're in your own little world. i think it's okay, if it's for something important, but god, when it is for something irrelevant, i want to burn them with heat vision.

Absolutely! Especially if it is a grown person. You are old enough to know better! Unless there is an emergency or a "what's for dinner" scenario as stated above. However, with a three year old, I am constantly being interrupted.

It is rude in some cases and it depends on the person who interrupts...

I don't mind if it is my hub or kids since they are more important than the book and I can always come back to the book afterward. However, it is mostly the kids who demand my attention while I read.

Yes, it is extremely rude. I personally don't like being interrupted when I'm doing anything that I really enjoy so yes, it's always rude.

It depends on the situation. If I am in public such as a restaurant and I get repeatedly interrupted it is rude.

It really depends on the time and situation. If it is important, it does not bother me. If it is something silly, I get frustrated. Reading is my way of escaping and encouraging my mind to expand to new ideas. My reading, although is very relaxing, is very important to me just like someone not wanting to be interrupted while watching sports.
