If a book has a different font than usual or switches between fonts to signify different characters I think it makes me a bit more interested because it catches the attention. It makes you wonder "oh what's this, why is it doing this" while you leaf through the pages and it just makes me more interested in the story because there mus be some meaning for why the font is like that.

I totally disagree unless the book is meant for children, where a variation in the font is meant to spark their attention or create variety.

But for an adult book? Absolutely not. Any variation in a readable typeset is goofy and it certainly would not make me interested in the book. It would be totally counterproductive and I'd dump the book in an instant.

If a book's text (the actual WORDS) aren't sufficient to pique my interest, forget it.

I haven't personally really given though about font styles. I'm more concerned about the font sizes. Some big fonts are just a turn-off, really. :(

I review books for a mystery website so I read dozens of new books, and recently I found the first instance of a font problem that really irritated me.

ALL the dialogue was in italics. Not just specially related dialogue, but all the speaking from all characters. So instead of using simple quotes "I love you." it was paragraph after paragraph of italicized font!

Highly annoying!

This is a new British printing. Does anyone know if italicized dialogue is a new trend in British typography? If so, it needs to be stopped.

I definetely judge a book by its font. I mean if the font is not kid-friendly ( clear enough to read) i will not bother. The pleasure here is to be able to navigate into the story well and if the boat ( words
, form of transportation to pleasure zone) does not sail smoothly, there is a problem. I will put the book down, sorry

I find certain fonts way easier to read, so yes if I open the book and it hurts my eyes to look at it, then I probably wont read the book.

No I wouldn't. I might judge it by it's cover once and a while but not the font.

Honestly when books have different fonts I get really excited about it! Like, most books have the same basic font and it gets kind of boring. But when a book has an unusual font it makes me really interested in it and I really wanna read it. It's like "wow look at the new thing it's so cool." So I judge a book by it's font but usually in a good way.

My premise is this: If the author is not capable or skillful enough to move you emotionally by the words themselves, the author needs to go back and do some revision.

Font does bother me. If it is weird or unprofessional I wouldn't read it because I don't like putting strain on my eyes.

I can't say it's a problem I have ever really thought about. I suppose if it was in a hard to read font, it would affect whether I read the book or not.

Unfortunately, it's a yes for me. I really don't like books with fonts that are too big. I think I like font 10-11 in general. But if I like a book, I'd look for a copy with a smaller font.

No not really. I don't really care about it's font but that's an interesting question. I know some people that have to have it be all pretty or whatever but I don't care about that.
