It was quite easier. Unlike new books, the only difference is new and used. Doesn't matter, same information or even more.
I once read a second-hand book with the previous owner's notes, which is what made me start taking notes in all of the books that I read.

I haven't found very many treasures, but I have gotten a few free bookmarks that I still use.

I opened a book that I had bought from a thrift store the other day and an old UNO card fell out.

I love visiting secondhand bookstores, just being able to go through the shelves and browse. It is a very different experience than the big box bookstores these days. I once found 5$ bill in a book I bought, also lots of information from previous owners and various odds and ends of paper.

I lived in Iraq for some time, and once I found a secondhand book left behind by an American soldier. The book was the Color Purple by Alice Walker. Inside it on the first page this was written: "we looked death in the eyes and it blinked."
This definitely was very touching to me.

I used to buy a lot of second-hand books in my first year of University. At some point, I would end up using the money intended for lunch for a few books because I didn't want to find them gone the net time I came back for them. I once found a note from someone to their best friend written within the book cover. It was really sweet, and I think it was from the 1940s.

Once, I found some grocery store coupons used as bookmarks. Sadly, they had expired, haha!

I am not sure If many people here are familiar with Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn but I found his book, Gulag Archipelago, on booksale and it cost Php 100 (2 USD) only but later on found that it is a gem! My partner actually liked the book and was thankful that I was able to find it. Lucky day, I guess. :)
Stay safe! Sending hugs
