Lord of the Flies or 1984?

I'm trying to decide on a book to read for AP English and I have two in mind: Lord of the Flies or 1984.
I'm not a big fan of the classics (due to my short attention span), however the plot line to both stories seemed intriguing.
I'm a huge fan of dystopian future, and I was wondering which book would be an easier, more entertaining read.
Also, I'm a bit scared to read Lord of the Flies (people say there's animal abuse and it's very disturbing. Seriously can't handle too much of that) So tell me just how extreme that is.
PS I loved the Hunger Games, but its different than graphically slaughtering a helpless animal. They're just humans XD
Also, if you'd be willing to suggest an alternate book, please do so as well! ( I would post the url to the list but I'm a newbie to this website, so I can't)
AND THANK YOU!

Personally I'm a fan of both books but certainly if graphic stuff bothers you then you had better go with 1984. Both books raise loads of points for discussion and should give you lots to think about. BTW we have topics on both books so you might give them a quick read through and it will give you an idea of what to expect from both books. Enjoy whichever you choose.

Also I just heard of another interesting read called "Brave New World." Have you read it? Is it any better than the forementioned titles?

I personally didn't like it but I know people who do so it's a toss up as far as recommending it to you. Of the three mentioned thus far I think
Lord Of The Flies is my favorite.

I think 1984 would be a better suggestion of the two. 1984 is very dystopian with a bit of political stuff in there.

I haven't had the chance to read 1984 yet. But I did read Lord of the Flies in my tenth grade English class and as a young teenager I absolutely hated it. I do intend to reread the book soon.

Since you enjoy dystopian future novels, I think that 1984 might be right up your alley. It doesn't have as much action as The Hunger Games, though.

I am currently in year 11 where I have just had to read Lord of the Flies for my exams. It is not a book that I would ever think about re-reading as I found it very boring, I have not yet read 1984, but after reading about it, it sounds a lot more interesting.

I prefer Brave New World to 1984 and Lord of the Flies. I remember reading that book in High School and I loved it. It spoke to me on some weird level. I did not get that with Lord of the Flies. I found it rather... boring? I guess you hear something is a classic and you think it must be amazing, but I was slightly disappointed. 1984 was not bad so I would suggest that one as well.
