What books/series made you fall in love with reading

Post by Jack King »

Being on this forum I think it is safe to say we are all book lovers, I wonder for each of us if there is one book or series that we can pinpoint as really giving us this love for books. I think for me it is 2 things - first as a younger child, 10 or younger, the Brian Jacques, Redwall series of books. They were the perfect books to move onto, there was plenty of them and they looked like very grown up books on the outside. The ongoing books based not so much around individual characters but the world and specific places and buildings allowed for a large range of content. The second most influential books for me was discovered in a school library aged 11 finding the Star Wars extended universe, more by luck than anything I ended up reading Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy first. From there I ended up reading and owning over 100 expanded universe books.

What other books/series had the same effect on you?

This is interesting! I haven't heard of the Redwall series and Thrawn trilogy yet. As for me, I was in grade 5 when I first read Tuesdays with Morrie. I think I was 12 years old at that time. Before that, I read Kidnapped by Robert Luis Stevenson, but I can say that I didn't really understand it then, unlike Tuesdays with Morrie. I think TwM spoke to me because I grew up without a father. I knew grief by feeling it without fully being aware of what it is by definition. Then I read The Five People You Meet in Heaven. These were my sister's books. There was an interval before I continued reading again. After getting hooked by the Twilight series, the genre which I have outgrown by now though I remember being obsessed with it (teen things), my love for reading continues to grow.

I know it's a simple and probably common answer, but for me, it was the Harry Potter series. It was the series I had read outside of school, and was a longer format than others (like children's books) so I was able to get a much more fulfilling experience than I'd ever had before.

Mine was The Harry Potter series, they were my first series longer than the average children's books, and I fell in love with reading novels ever science.

Mine was the ladybird books as a child. The elves and the shoemaker, Princess and the pea, Rumplestiltskin.
Enid Blyton stories I loved The enchanted wood series.
My all time favourite was Hundred and one Dalmatians. By Dodie Smith. I still read it today.

Interesting enough despite the books coming out as I was a child/teenager they never really appealed to me, I think when the first one came out I was already reading older books and more in depth magical/fantasy books such as Lord of the Rings. I also had no friends interested them where as most my friends loved Lord of the Rings and we always enjoyed talking about it together.

That definitely does not sound like a childs book! What is the series about?

101 Dalmatians as a child but still love to read it over and over.
As an adult I can’t say just one in particular because I’m so in the moment of each book I read

It is all about a serial killer who seeks revenge to those who wronged her. Also, it is mixed with the intrigue of romance. Be warn though, it is too graphic and it's on the POV of the serial killer.

What drew you to the books? Did you have friends who had read and recommended it?

I think my favorite book series as a child was the Nancy Drew books. Those books got me hooked on mysteries. It amazes me that children today also enjoy those books. They are true classics. My current favorite series of books is the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. I tried to watch the TV series, but it is definitely not as good as the books. I am eagerly waiting for the next book in the series.
