However if I'm reading to review and edit my novel prior to submission to the publsher? Bad news. I need to pay attention to my own writing, hey?
I agree. While I am not a professional writer, I used to have the same problem when proofreading my college essays. I lost more points than I care to remember because of sleep deprivation!

It happens to me a lot. Generally it either means that I am too tired to read at that time, or that I'm not in the right mindset for that particular book.

All the time, I bet this happens in each book I read at least once. I hate it though because I strongly dislike rereading parts even if I don't remember them. I guess that's how impatient I am.

Of course the principal problem is that if you find yourself reading blankly, how far back to you need to go to fix this and how will you know? ha ha

Then again, during my reading many books which I review, there are times when I'd gladly appreciate having faded out instead of reading the awful stuff on the page. Eeek!

Absolutely - often when I don't realise that I'm not actually in the mood to read at all. Go away, do something else and come back is the only advice I can give.

This usually happens when I get really tired or if I'm not enjoying a certain portion of the book.

Yes! I was reading "The Fellowship of the Ring" one night, finished it, and started reading "The Two Towers" when I found myself finished with it and not remembering what had happened at all. I'm pretty sure that I was half-asleep while reading it, I had to restart it in the morning, it was pretty upsetting.

This is a surprising bonus of dyslexia, I am actually not capable of doing this. If I start daydreaming, i stop reading. It takes my brain effort to read I guess.

Recently, more often then before. Personally,I find it happens when I don't have a lot of external stimuli and resort to reading to fill the time instead of reading because I genuinely want to. It'll take me a few minutes to realize it and when it does, I try reading it again and if it doesn't work out, then I put the book down for another time.

Never happens, unless I'm reading something that's disjointed or totally boring. Then I break and start again.

I understand what you mean but I actually read it while thinking about something else. I don't train any of the information for long but when I snap back into reality I can hear the words in my head.
Where is the line between insanity and creativity?
Is the reality of the world different from how we perceive and experience it in our minds? Does physical reality exist apart from the human mind?

I have. Normally takes me a few paragraphs to realize. I try to find a very quite part of the house to read.
