One classic American novel that comes to mind is F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby.
Almost every main character that I can think of is corrupted by greed. Money is very important to everyone involved if I remember correctly. It's been several years since I've read it though.

If you have a while, also try The Octopus by Frank Norris. It's about corruption in the Railroad around the turn of the century.
I'd say Gatsby is a good choice too.
