My preference is definitely for paperback, smaller lighter easier to use however I have started shopping around old and second hand book shops for first edition Star Wars books.
There’s nothing like a good second hand book. Many books, especially children’s books, have been changed for political correctness. Such a shame in my opinion. I’m collecting old Enid Blyton books at the moment, a blast from on my childhood.

Paperbacks are more affordable. It has the same content of the hardbound. Paperbacks are very convenient to bring everywhere.

I’m guessing from your name you’re UK/Wales based? I know Roald Dahl books has been in the news recently about changes to his books. At least now they are going to have both the original and edited version for sale.

And bought our pretty crowns, but never paid the price
Find me in the river, find me there
Find me on my knees with my soul laid bare

Yes absolutely love Ronald Dahl too, sadly it’s happening to a lot of work 😢

I prefer both paperback and hardcover. If the book is special edition and collectable than I will buy hardcover.

A hardcover book always gives me a proud feeling. There is something about taking extra care not to damage its prestige. But a paperback book is a companion that I can carry whenever I want.

I don't have a strong preference, but like OP, if I'm collecting a series, I prefer them to be the same format and edition.

I like paperback because the cover moves with the pages better. Also, the hardcover books often have sleeves on them that bother me. I have to keep adjusting the sleeves the whole time I'm reading so that they line up with the top and bottom and edge of the book.

I love the feel of hard cover books, and they're so sturdy and a lot harder to damage. On the other hand, they're heavy, take up more space and not to mention more expensive. It is a struggle to choose, but if I have a choice, I generally get paperback.
However, if I'm going to collect a series that I really like or if it is one of those huge books like Eragon, then I opt for hardcover.

Paperback...less expensive, easy to find at used book sales, convenient to carry/travel with, can fit more onto shelves and I feel more at ease lending them.

I love the way a nice hardback reads, but if I can't find a used copy, I opt for the paper. Never for the e-version
