I just finished a book, Bucolic, and I cried so much at the end that my dog was actually trying to console me. It was tragic.

Cry the Beloved Country - by Alan Paton , although the movie captures the emotion pretty accurately as well.

Dying well by Susan Ducharme Hoben really got me. I try not to get emotional when reading but I couldn't help it.

"Me Before you" by Jojo Moyes - Do not read this book in public. I was sobbing and strangers had to ask if I was ok.

The Boy in the striped pajamas- It was too much. The story is too sweet and too painful.

The first book that made me cry was Bridge to Terabithia, which I read in the fifth grade. Most recently, My Sister's Keeper made me cry tears of fury. There have been so many others in between. Growing up I used to cry at the end of long books or series just because I'd knew I'd miss the characters.

What sets apart the books that make you cry? Affection for the characters? Style of writing? Are people who cry when they read books just more emotional?

The Long Song by Andrea Levy. I had never heard of her. Picked up the book in a bookshop for a summer read. Its been televised since. I've never watched it, but there was one moment in the book that made me cry. It's when the house master (slave owner's) wife took the protagonist's child into the house to be a house slave. The mother knew that she was most likely never going to see her daughter again, and couldn't say a damn thing about it. She had to carry on working in the fields as if nothing had happened. The whole book was sad, but that moment was gut wrenching.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Next was the book that made me cry. I guess it's because I have always found communicating difficult and had to work at it constantly. The struggles of the mentally ill are something I found heartbreaking. I imagine it must be so difficult to feel things make perfect sense to you, but the world simply cannot, or will not, take the time to understand you.

One of the only books that have ever made me cry and continue to make me cry every time I read it is Kira-Kira by Cynthia Kadohata--it is such a beautiful yet emotional story.
