Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities. It was so heartbreaking what Sydney Carton did — taking his lover's husband place at the guillotine so she would not die of sadness.
The ending words ring in my head even as I right this now:
It is a far far better thing I do than I have ever done; it is a far far better rest I go to than I have ever known.

The book that still gets me all sneezy is "Left to Tell” by Immaculee Illibagiza.
It is a true story of how she survived the 1994 Rwandan genocide by being locked up in a pastor's bathroom with five other people. The rest of her family was not so lucky.
