Books You've Read That Have Kept You Awake at Night!

Post by MoseyProse »

I don't know if anyone else has had it happen to them, but it happens to me sometimes!

You've just finished reading a book, either during the day or at night. You go to bed to go to sleep but you just can't! Whether it be the plot twist at the end has your mind reeling, you've just had an existential crisis brought on by the book's plot or you've just read something so terrifying you can barely shut your eyes, this is the place to discuss every book that has given you a sleepless night!

For example, one of Stephen King's short stories from his book The Skeleton Crew kept me awake the night after I read it. It's called the Jaunt and to avoid spoiling the plot, I'll just say it is a science fiction horror story involving space teleportation that went horribly wrong. I stayed awake all night pondering high tech teleportation and whether it would be as horrific as Stephen King described it to be!

It happens a lot to me, I'll just keep replaying the novel in my head. sometimes I end up spending hours on bed thinking of the book and struggling to put the thought off so I can sleep.

Yeah I think the only books I read that had me up all night thinking was when I used to read R.L. Stine when I was younger and then when I read the Twilight Saga series.

I read All Quiet on the Western Front for a history class in college. I would read a few chapters before bed. When I would finally fall asleep, I would have nightmares about being at war.

The first time I read Oscar Wilde's 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' I couldn't get to sleep and when I did had very strange dreams about pictures metamorphosing.

The Child Called It kept me awake many nights. I just couldn't understand how a mother could abuse her child to this extent.

Most books have a way of keeping me up but Dark Matter by Michelle Paver had me up for weeks! I even had to sleep with the lights on for the first few days as the story had sent my nerves into over drive.

Don't think I slept after I finished reading the last Harry Potter book 😅 It was like the end of my childhood and it had me all emotional!

I also still think about Pet Semetary when going to sleep. Chilling book.

It's only a short story, but Daphne du Maurier's 'The Blue Lenses' would give most people nightmares!

I can't sleep after I finish a good series that has been going on for a few years. It feels like something big is finished and I am always sad about that.

As a young person just moved out of home, I read "Salem's Lot" by Stephen King. I actually had a nightmare about vampires in my flat.

Not only it kept me awake but I have also dreamed of it. I saw flashes of green in my dreams every night I read Harry Potter. Yes, it was like I am "Avada Kedavra-ing" someone in my dream :D
Stay safe! Sending hugs
