I read a lot of YA books but there was this one book in particular that had a character that really upset me. She was so immature and self-centered (which I guess is "normal" for a teenager), but at the end, she wasn't able to redeem herself.

Yes, some characters I've hated with passion, it's ridiculous. I see it as a complement to the writer, though.

I haven't been upset by a character, but I have been upset by an author. When I read the "Red wedding" in the Game of Thrones book, I was so mad that I threw the book against the wall.

Yes, I once threw a book out of the window of moving city bus for that very reason. :lol2:

Yes, actually it's McDowell in this month's book. I think he is too self-centered in the beginning of the book.

Not often. If a character makes one bad or reckless decision, I give it a pass, because flawed characters can be the most rewarding. If a character is stupid and acts like a spoiled brat, I usually set down the book for a moment to compose myself while the predictable tune of melodrama rings in my head. But if they're a lost cause, and utterly pathetic, I grit my teeth and start rooting for the nearest bad guy.

Absolutely! Jane Eyre is still the novel I've taken the longest time to read, and it probably always will be. A large part of that has to do with the irrational sentiments (at least to me) of the main character.

I felt this way so much while reading the novel too! And his transformation does not really happen on page (it's more like a skip ahead), so it's hard for me to start to like him.

Definitely yes. Some characters are happen to be uncoorparative and make decisions that seem to be very painful for others.

Yes, genuinely. There have been times where I have hated a character in a novel because of one action they committed. I suppose it can be blamed on my extreme investment into the characters, but any betrayal scene will instantly make me mad at the characters.

ALL the time! But I find that if I dislike a character they are written well. No one is perfect and I can't expect every character to make the best decision every time because it is unrealistic.

Definitely, especially when the main character makes the wrong move.

Oh yes of course. Sometimes if I am angry enough at how the main character acts I wont even finish the book. If I know they are just going to continue to be frustrating, I wont enjoy myself reading. But that is very rarely.

I have often lamented the fact that these book characters are not actual flesh and blood people, so I cannot actually physically fight them. It's a tragedy.
