And how about this:
The train's whistle screamed through the cold and silent night.
(This is my version)

The problem is the whole book was littered with awkward sentences like this and worse. It was a difficult read, though.

This is much better.
It sounds pleasing to the ears.
It's a wonder how you were able to read the whole book if that was the case.
