One may as well begin with Jerome's emails to his father:

So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

Sounds like a procedural, like there's a mystery afoot.

Currently reading The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman myself:
"Once upon a time, before the whole world changed, it was possible to run away from home, disguise who you were, and fit into polite society."

She at once grabs onto our obvious desire for a fairy tale, that's why I pick up an Alice Hoffman book half the time, and the need for escapism while also letting us know we're taking a trip to the not so distant past of reinventing yourself by moving. My how far we've moved from that. The more engrained we get into social media, the more we will never be able to run away from who we used to be. Reinvention I think is still possible but we've always got to acknowledge where we came from. Not very escapist friendly, if you ask me.

In Haddam, summer floats over tree-softened streets like a sweet lotion balm from a careless, languorous god, and the world falls in tune with its own mysterious anthems.

You have been misled - the boy is writing to his father that he has fallen in love with a young woman. :D

How delightful to be misled! I love surprises. It was the heavy formality in the language. And I probably watch too much crime TV shows.
