Do you read in a language other than English

Post by Vector »

Hello all! I am currently doing a study on reading preferences, and fortunately discovered this vibrant community through that endeavor.

My study is on reading preferences of those who live in the US, and can speak a language other than English. For bilingual folks, choosing a reading language depends on many factors - fluency, availability of desirable books, and of course, cultural factors.

Do folks with ties to France read more in their native language compared to those with ties to Germany? Why? How about Spain vs. Mexico? Is it a cultural thing, or driven by availability, price, etc? Those are the questions that I am trying to answer.

I would love to hear your views and get your inputs....

Your thoughts are much appreciated!

It surely depends upon the influence of any foreign language (English in this case) over the native language. If the influence of foreign language is greater, people tend to read more in that language.

PS: Ducky its nice to have you back on the forum. I was missing your comments from quite some days.

I am brazillian and spent last year working and studing on Canada, Toronto. I read lots of books in english there, i dont really mind if i read it on english or portuguese, tough i think the portuguese language is richer and can describe situations and emotions with way more details and vibration.

English is easier to read, portuguese is more enjoyable.

My viewpoint, and my contribution to this pool.

I attempted reading in German as I was learning to speak it, but I found that I don't have a gift for other languages.

I've studied French, and read plenty in that language (though mostly for school). I've also studied Spanish, and am painstakingly working through a novel, if only because I want to be able to say that I have done so! These experiences make me aware that it's worth reading a work in the original language if at all possible.

(I didn't vote because none of the options seemed to apply ...)

I read significantly faster in English but I do try to read in Thai (my first language) on occasion just so I don't forget. Although many foreign books are translated into English, it is nice to read things in their original language and it also exposes you to titles not available in English as well.

Sorry, I voted before reading your post - and then I saw this sentence.

Since I don't live in USA and dont know any other languages with any fluency at all, I should not have voted.

Not yet, but I am currently learning Chinese. So maybe one day in the future I'll be able to read Chinese books. :)

i don't know what to answer. I am Greek. i read books in greek and english. i prefer to read in greek books that are written by greek authors. if the books original language is english, i prefer to read the english. books that the original language is other than greek or english, i'm indifferent to what language i read.

so the first option and the third options are not always true, as i explained
the second and fourth options are not true. there are books in greek and i read some greek books.
