Books are definitely better. They give you insights into the major characters' thoughts. Sometimes it is not evident from the movies exactly what a character is thinking before he/she does something. But the books do good on analysing their psychology. It explains a lot about Bella, her insecurities, her attachment to Edward, her anguish over their fall-out, her comfort in Jacob etc. In fact the whole Bella-Edward-Jacob equation gains a lot more significance if one reads the book. Also, in Breaking Dawn, where a few chapters are narrated by Jacob, we get a complete view of his immense love for Bella, and the excruciating pain he feels during Bella's last few days as human. In short, reading the books will make you root for them more.
Saying that, I should also add another point. The way the encounter between Cullens and the Volturi unfolds in the movie 'Breaking Dawn' is different from the book. While I liked the strategy described in the book, the movie scene seemed more thrilling.

I love the book more than the movie. The book had more details and every single action explained clearly. Whereas in the movie, I felt it to be vague. The book showed better from Bella's perspective.

I think the books were still better than the movies especially the last movie where they tried to fool everyone with an amazing climax in the movie.
