Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and The Joy Luck Club. These are just some of the amazing books which were made into equally amazing movies. I often do not enjoy movies based on books I have read, but these movies were outstanding.

A favorite "movie/book" for me would have to be Atonement. While the film is definitely more recent than the novel, I think it's a well executed adaptation. When adapting a book to a film version you don't have to consider the actual sequencing but if they stay true to the greater nature of the plot and characters. Atonement, the movie, is a great example of that. The casting is spot on. This is huge for me. The wonderful actors really bring the characters to life and do them justice. While Atonement is not my all-time favorite book, seeing the film gave me a deeper respect for it textually. I think it's so well executed that Ian McEwan's writing shines through. That is all you really want in this case, a film that allows you to see the layers within the words being brought to life on screen.

This wasnt exactly a movie, but I remember years ago there was a TV program, Studio One or Kraft Theatre or one of those that did a live dramatization of Algernon Blackwood's The Wendigo. Thats a creepy story, and even with the limited technology they had back then the TV version was very chilling, something you didnt want to watch alone. It had a young Walter Matthau as one of the lead characters. The one part where they found him with his feet burnt off was especially chilling.

Do TV series count? If so, my favorite books are currently being made into one -- the Outlander series, by Diana Gabaldon. I can't wait! Next would be Game of Thrones.

If TV shows don't count, I really like reading and watching The Lucky One, by Nicholas Sparks.

I actually have a few. I enjoy reading a book then going and watching the movie. It helps me put a face and physical place to the words and descriptions. (If the movie is true to the book, of course.)
1. The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe by CS Lewis
2. Les Miserables by Victor Hugo
3. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (Can't wait for Catching Fire in Nov!!)
4. The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum
5. Dear John by Nicholas Sparks
6. The Lightening Thief by Rick Riordan
and The Harry Potter Series of course! :)

My favorite is probably Fight Club. I saw the movie first and it inspired me to read the book. They're both so good!

A few others are Jurassic Park, The Shining (the old movie), and Carrie (the new movie).

Also I'm currently reading Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. I'm a big fan of the movie and so far the book is great.

Rosemarys Baby, that is a true classic, both the book and the movie. The Shining was OK, not the best movie, but Jack Nicholson's performance made that one.

One of my favorite books is War of the Worlds. The 1954 version was the best, it didnt follow the original story too closely but it was still a terrifying movie. The Tom Cruise version was kind of mediocre, not much to it.
