Wow, there are a few...

The Scarlet Letter
Oliver Twist
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass
The plays of Shakespeare
Jane Eyre
The Lord of the Rings
Great Expectations

I haven't yet read even a small portion of the Harry Potter series. Believe me, I want to, and I do BECAUSE I love the movies! :D If there are more I think of later, I'll post them here! Oh, oh! I really liked Treasure Island!

These great books were made into mediocre movies, in my opinion:
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Atonement by Ian McEwan
Thank you for Smoking by Christopher Buckley
Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Never Let Me Go (Kazuo Ishiguro)

However, I think the following movies lived up to the books:
To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee)
In Cold Blood (Truman Capote)
The Princess Bride (William Goldman)
The Lovely Bones (Alice Sebold)
Bridget Jones's Diary (Helen Fielding)

The first thing that came to mind is Othello but would you count that as a play instead of a book?

This makes for a hard choice. Breakfast at Tiffany's is my favorite movie and it is also a book however, the book is different than the movie.

I am often disappointed by movies that are made from books. I was really disappointed in the Angels and Demons movie as Dan Brown's book was so great.

I was most impressed with The Lord of the Rings movies as I felt they were true to the books.

The Lord of The Rings trilogy. My favourite childhood books made into pretty great films (much to my relief as I was nervous to see them on screen) made right here in my beautiful country, New Zealand.

"Follow The Rabbit Proof Fence" a biographical book written by Doris Pilkington Garimara was made into a movie titled "Rabbit Proof Fence" and it's every bit as emotional as the book.
