Male Vs Female Authors What do you prefer?

Post by Booklover83 »

I have a question for everyone. What gender author do your prefer, male or female? The reason I ask is because in looking at my current book collection and thinking about what I read I find I enjoy female authors more than male ones. Do not get me wrong, I enjoy male authors from time to time but on the whole, I am a female author kind of guy. I find the female authors to have the most vivid imagination most of the time with a few male exceptions of course. What does everyone else prefer and why?

Most of the books I own are from male writers so logically you could say I prefer them, but it is more likely that I prefer the subject matter that they write which would mostly be action thrillers. That being said my favourite book Poppy Day is by Amanda Prowse a female writer - it covers a British soldier being taken hostage in Afghanistan and what his wife does to try and get him back. It is a masterpiece. published by TIP ltd and out on Kindle and paperback.

It dosent matter to me, male of female. If I like the book, I dont care who writes it.

I can understand that one Bighuey. I just find that most of the books I read and enjoy are from female authors. For instance, I am reading Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert right now and I love it so far! I have laughed out loud so many times in the first section alone.

I suppose most of my favorite authors are male, come to think about it, but I like a lot of female authors too like Edith Wharton, Marjorie Bowen, Leigh Brackett, Andre Norton,Judith Merrill mostly the old classics.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I think there should be a third option on this poll: Don't Care (as long as they are good)

Well I don't have any strong choice for male or female author. If writer is good and book is good, it is enough for me to choose writer.

I cant pick one as both men and women write good and bad book so the choice is too simplistic in my opinion.

Spot on ferretbait, the sex of the author does not come into it when I choose a book, but when i think about it ,I have read far more books by males than female. Subconscious choice? I don't think there's anything in it, I've just read a lot of S.King, D.Koontz, R.Laymon and J.Herbert because that's the genre i like.

To be honest with you all, I haven't found any REAL good female authors. All my love and interests in books come from male authors. There have been very few books that I've found to be excellent in the female department.

I actively avoid women authors. It's not easy since so many conceal their gender.

I agree with Bighuey. I do not judge or prefer if the author is Male or Female. The only thing that really counts is the story. What if you were given a book and you were not told the sex of the author. I bet you would not be able to tell which sex the author was. I prefer author's over others, on their talent and ability rather then their gender.

Many authors are encouraged to conceal their gender by their publisher.
The commercial viability of a novel is still connected to its author’s gender; at least in the publishers view.
It is supposed that initials will deter stigma, broaden the market and offer wider appeal.

However, in the case of P.D. James, A.A. Milne, H.G. Wells, J.K. Rowling, J.R.R. Tolkien, J.B. Priestley, D.H. Lawrence, J.D. Salinger, J.D. Robb, A.C. Crispin, E. Nesbitt, C.S. Lewis, C.J. Cherryh, E.M. Forster, etc, we found out who they were anyway. And for me it didn't matter.

(N.B. Can anyone name the women authors in the above list?)

@Maud
That's odd considering it's generally accepted that the vast majority of readers are female!
