Hi all

I want to get your opinions on what is the healthier option in cooking.

Would you use margarine, butter or olive oil as an alternative?

I currently use olive oil.

There are basic differences in these products based on the levels of saturated versus unsaturated fats that are in each product. Typically speaking, animal fats like butter are more saturated and are not as healthy as the plant-based oils. Oils are more highly unsaturated. These are healthier options when cooking. The margarine will likely have around 14 grams of fat per serving and this includes around 2-3 grams of saturated fats and about 6 grams of monounsaturated fats and about 6 grams of polyunsaturated fats. The olive oil has a higher amount of monounsaturated fats. Read your label and you will see this to be true. Overall, oils and plant-derived triglycerides are healthier for you. I, however, love to cook and sometimes you can not beat the flavor of real butter. Moderation is the key in those instances. I hope this has been helpful. I am a biology teacher and have just finished teaching these same concepts to my students!

When cooking, I always use olive oil. I feel that it is healthier and does not burn as easy as butter does.

I also use olive oil! A lot of recipes, in my opinion, taste better with olive oil than with butter, plus it's less of the unhealthy fat that you probably want to avoid. :)

You can use broth when saute or there is a fat free oil substitute online I like. I do on occasion use olive oil when I want flavor.

I keep both butter and olive oil on hand as I use olive oil for certain foods, and butter for others. Naturally, I like butter the best.:)

Olive oil. It's healthier. But if you want to go really healthy use coconut oil.

Olive oil is definitely healthier. In fact, it's good to ingest a little olive oil everyday.

Olive oil is great for sautes. I'm not sure how good of a substitute it would be if you were baking cookies or something. Sometimes butter is the best option while cooking, in moderation, it's fine. But if you were doing some Paula Deen type recipe with two sticks of butter I would definitely research substitutes!

You shouldn't be using olive oil in cooking- it's claimed to produce toxic chemicals when heated. Rice oil, Rapeseed oil, organic sunflower oil, even coconut oil are better and healthier alternatives.

Our of those options I believe that olive oil is the healthiest, however, if you want a really healthy oil you should try and use coconut oil
