I often hear of readers who will watch the movie but it’s uncommon for movie-goers to rush out afterwards and buy the book.
I dont know is it that uncommon. I went out to buy the books of both 127 Hours and The Social Network after the fact i had seen the movies, granted both movies were true stories so that may have made a difference but i would definitely consider buying a book of a movie having watched it first :D

Ah, but you're a reader. I think Maud was referring to the average non-reading movie-goer.

I'd have to agree. There are a few good examples where the movie wasn't at least at some level a disappointment.
LOTR was... fairly on target and a wonderful movie, but it's an excpetion. I still wanted to see Tom Bombadill. ;)

One of my favorite books is The Dark Materials Series By Phillip Pullman and They made the first book - The Golden Compass - even had Nicole Kidman and it was terrible, just terrible.

Having blasted movie adaptations, I must confess that "The Princess Bride" is one of my favorite movies, but I've never read the book.

If I were to choose a book to be made into a movie, I'd choose one from the action-suspense genre. I like spy (Bourne, not Bond) and commando movies. If the movie manages to ruin the story, at least I'd enjoy the action sequences.

I havent got around to the Odd Thomas series yet (its gethering dust since Xmas 2008  ) but i agree with you on Duma Key, it would make a fantastic movie in my opinion and, in the right hands, could be very scary. Imagine the two lost little girls storming the beach house with bloody footprints, or else the ancient Pagasus ship and her evil cargo. It would not be a terribly difficult movie to film and, like the book, is a slow-burner before the scares are unleashed on the wary audience. Definitely a classic in the making and would attract a lot of non-King fans and generic horror fans with its unusual setting.

I agree. That can be very interesting. I'm wondering if you have any examples of the type of thing you mean by this?

I don't have a good opinion about Catcher in the Rye but I think it could make a good movie.

Lovecraft's Re-Animator is a good example of this. The film took the concept of a substance which resurrects the dead, but had a totally different setting and plot progression. Really enjoyed that one.

One movie that was faithful to the book was The Great Gatsby. It was almost word for word as the book but it still wasnt as good as the book. The worst adaptation I think was Steven King's Christine. It was one of the best books I have ever read but the movie was garbage. The only good thing about it was the classic rock music from that era. I would buy two dvd's of it, one to crap on and one to cover it with, it was that bad.

I would love to see the book The Shack by:Wm. Paul Young turn into a movie. But then, it could possibly turn into a grey matter do to the fact that the book is based on a man spending a weekend with God, which would turn into a religious matter with deep Pros and cons.

The book to me was fantastic which I do recommend......and then to each his own.

Making good books into movies is just a bad idea. So, I guess books that aren't so great are all good contenders for movie adaptations.

Very few books have made good movies, theres a few exceptions like Ben-Hur, Gone With The Wind, Steven King's The Dead Zone but mostly the movies really butcher a good book. I read a book a couple years ago called The Terror by Arthur Machen and I was thinking at the time it might make a good movie if they stuck to the story and didnt change it around like they usually do. With a decent director and screenwriter it could be a very good movie. But that will probably never happen.
