I love the politics, international intrigue, characters chosen (casting)... Of course, the books are more detailed which makes the movies exciting. I never left a book reading or movie disappointed.
Grisham's
1. The Firm
2. Pelican Brief
3. The Rainmaker
Clancy's
4. Patriot Games
5. Clear and Present Danger

I love the movie! I first watched the movie and then read the book, and I thought watching the movie added a dimension to the imagination of the book.
Also, I think the "Lord of the Rings" series was also adapted nicely into the movies!
And 'Twilight', first movie and book of course!

To Kill A Mockingbird
This is probably the best book-to-screen adaptation I have ever seen. I thought the characters were perfectly cast in the movie; in fact, the Scout character (Mary Badham) was the exact image of the child I imagined from the book. The parts they didn't include from the book actually improved the story rather than detracted from it in my opinion.
The Hunger Games
I saw the movie first and then read the book. The only really radical departure from the book was the "werewolves" at the end which, rather than bringing back to life the dead tributes as monsters as was in the book, they were instead generic Creations of The Capitol. I honestly liked the way the movie version treated this issue far better than the book, though I must say I was very impressed with the rest of Susan Collins' creativity with the story as well as her writing style. Other than that the movie stayed pretty close to the book.
Of Mice And Men (The Blake / Chaney version)
Once again I thought they were pretty true to the book. I can't recall any serious omissions or changes. The movie was so well acted and presented that I felt that it captures Steinbeck's writing style perfectly even though this was on the screen and not in prose.
The Godfather
There was an enormous omission in the original movie with regard to Vito Corleone's past, but what WAS on the screen was a perfect depiction of that section of the book that was intended to be covered, in my opinion. The backstory (the 1920s scenes and story), which was omitted in the first movie, was presented in the sequel and it included some of the finest acting and cinematography that I have ever seen - it was quite possibly the VERY finest I have ever seen.
