Hunter S Thompson’s influence on actors

One of the most interesting things I’ve read about Hunter S Thompson is when Jonny Depp was getting ready for his role in Of Fear and Loathing, Bill Murray (who had played him in Where the Buffalo Roam) told Depp that once he plays Thompson, he would never be able to separate himself.

Even before that, I could see the huge influence Thompson had on Depp and some of his other roles. Specifically the role of Captain Jack Sparrow.

Are there other roles you see this influence?
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!” HST
