Do you enjoy different genres in film vs. books?

Post by Sarah_Anna »

Hello All!

Just curious to see if there are others who typically enjoy different genres in film vs. books.

For example, I love comedies in the form of film, but don't really enjoy this genre of book.

For me, facial expressions and tone of voice are really important in comedy and I think this is lost when in written form.

Do you agree? What are your thoughts? Anyone have similar examples?

Yes,I agree. Because it shows their facial expressions and the way they act..

I agree! I'm not a huge fan of non fiction books but I'd definitely watch a documentary or historical film.

I enjoy films because I'm able to see body languages and expressions vs a book in which I have to create a mental picture of what I think the character's expressions and body langue is like. This is often times a reflection of my experience or the expression that I associate with a particular circumstance.

Completely agree on your thoughts on comedy. Tone and facial expressions are extremely important in this genre.

I'm not really fond of sci-fi books. A lot of the futuristic imagery is in watching the different worlds. For example, I love Star Wars, but it would never feel the same way if it was a book. Reading descriptions of the technology, the clothing, the different races is something really different, and it doesn't really feel as realistic as watching it.

I am absolutely the same. It takes me forever to slog through a nonfiction book. But documentaries (especially about crime and serial killers...) are some of my favorite entertainment.

I agree with you OP. I usually like comedy in films, and not so much in books. In books, I read all kinds of genres.

Yes! I enjoy a variety of genres for both films and books! Sure there are preferences, but I like to read a variety to explore different stories and films.

Yes! I love reading horror books, but I can't watch horror movies. If I get scared reading a book it doesn't haunt me after the way it does when I watch a scary movie. I've gathered enough courage to watch a few, but for the most part I prefer to read horror instead of watching it. There are also some genres that I like in both movies and books, like romance, fiction and true crime.

I actually do! I had never considered it, but in films I prefer to watch very simple romantic comedies, just to hang out. When it comes to books, though, I like more intricate fantasy/sci-fi books and sometimes romance.

Tbh, no. I find it hard to venture out from my default and favourite genre which is romance. Even if I do like a different genre, there's some sort of romantic angle in it for sure.

Typically I prefer the book over the movie. Most onscreen portrayals never live up to my imagination!

I like watching action in movies because in books it is just too hard to follow.

Yes, I too have different opinion between books and movie. In movie I like romantic comedy and action genres but in books I love to read fantasies, autobiography and romantic books a lot 😁.

This is something I never thought about before and come to think of it, there are so many genres that I like on film but not in books, for one I love horror movies, but I can't say the same for horror books, I think its because cinematography, score and lighting add so much to a scary story and horror books doesn't give me the satisfaction of watching a horror movie
