This is a very controversial Question
Some people basically miss the question.God is not up or down
God is within you.we all are gods,but We do have a higher creator .

That is some question...
My life is driven by curiosity about many things, and I've pondered this same question over time. I searched within myself, I studied theology, philosophy, and different cultural beliefs, all to little avail.
Finally I concluded that God may not be represented well by religion, and is quite possibly better explained through science.
Humor me for a moment
In the beginning God created creation
Is this the big bang?
The Sun, stars and moon was created on the fourth day. which leads me to wonder what the length of a "day" was prior to that. Was it a 24 hour period, or untold millions of years?
God may just quite possibly be a force that is as aware of individual humans as we are of single cells within our body. That means that God may in fact exist, and can be reconciled with science/evolution, but is not as the Biblical God is depicted.
Eventually, rather than continue searching for an answer which I am in no position to acquire, I settled on this.
Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.

God is the Supreme power. Whether you believe it or not, you name it or not, you call it God or not, but there is definitely an infinite power that is guiding us. I refer to it as God.
