Personally, I think films leave out the small details in books that make the book what it is.

To be precise,films don't cover many aspects of books,i assume some messages can easily be written than acted.

I have rarely if ever have came across the movie created from a previous book ever been better then just reading the book itself. If im going to watch and read I prefer to watch them movie first because I don't like being disappointed about how the film didn't do the book any justice.

They rarely do, especially nowadays when ideology is the only thing they're interested in.

No,they don't because some scenes in my opinion cannot be potrayed upto 50% into films.

The Wizard of Oz movie contains the core ideas and spirit of the novel even if there are notable differences, including taking out some bits at the ending, simplifying things (the four meet Oz together rather than four very unique introductions), adding music, etc. The movie is an example of a passionate, well liked adaptation.

Some adaptations take artistic license too far though, especially when they distort the characters and ideas of the book. The worst is when they don't even seem to like the source material yet make an adaptation anyways.

To show what I mean, here is how The Guardian described The Dark is Rising movie, "The makers have taken considerable liberties with their source material - not only changing the nationality of the hero and his family (to American), and the title throughout the rest of the world (to The Seeker), but also excising virtually the entire back story of the town and its inhabitants... Walden have assiduously removed every trace of the pagan (ie, non-Judeo-Christian) elements that were crucial to the original plot, all that fine old Celtic/Arthurian folklore - the Sleepers, Herne the Hunter, the Old Magic... And in reducing her narrative to a simplistic good-versus-evil dialectic, the film contradicts the very spirit of her original books."

Not all of them do justice to it; I could recall when I read the book “How Stella got her grooves” then after watching the movie months later, I still preferred the book to the movie.

A few do while alot don't.
In a book, the details are vivid and writers can go wild with their writing and when those books want to be adapted into movies, they tend to cut out chunks of it and simplify everything most of the time.
Only a few maintain book originality and it's spark.

To answer this question, all you need to do is pay attention to the reviews of all those people who have read the book and watched its movie too.Most plot writers change the storyline based on their taste, which of course reduces the attraction of the story and causes the majority of the complaints.

There are some great movies of books, so they are not entirely bad or anything. Thought I enjoy reading books more.
