Fires on the Plain (book and movie) - anyone read or watch?

Its an older Japanese title, but its one of the most poignant war movies I've ever seen/read, and one of the few I know to show the questions of cannibalism and desperation on the front lines.

Anyone else watch/read/have any thoughts on this? I think it has like a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes last I checked.
