Ghost stories, please?

Post by Bad Macaw »

I love ghost stories, but I can't find something that's really scary.
Preferably Victorian era in England! Doesn't have to be, but please NOT nowadays... no technology, no mobile phones, no social media, no computers, no cinnamon lattes!
I'm looking for old fashioned ghosts, creepy old houses, terrible family secrets!
Any suggestions?

Hell House - Richard Matheson

Set in the 1950s, but quite excellent.

You say you like Victorian ghost stories... have you read much by M.R. James? The one I'm thinking of here is 'Lost Hearts'.

Also, 'The Old Nurse's Story' by Elizabeth Gaskell. It's a haunted house tale spanning generations.
