Need some good recommendations for a young boy,

Post by mthomas14 »

It has been very hard to get my stepson to enjoy and to want to read.

I was hoping someone may have some recommendations for a 9 yr old boy, as it is part of his nightly homework to complete a book log on what books he may enjoy to make this process a more enjoyable one for him.

What about graphic novels? They might peek his interest in reading.
Life without a good book is something MrsCatInTheHat cannot imagine.

I have two grandsons who are avid readers and they're currently enjoying Skellig by David Almond. This YA book is about a young man named Michael who discovers a strange, magical creature living inside a ramshackle garage with his new-found friend, Mina, and I understand it's great fun to read.

My son is 10 and he loves books by Roald Dahl. He also loves the Goose Bumps series.

Oh I should have mentioned "The 26 Story Tree House"

What about the Hatchet series by Gary Paulsen? It's about a young boy who gets planewrecked and lost, and the pilot dies and he has to survive by himself with nothing but a *spoiler alert* hatchet. I read it at about that age and it's one of the books I credit with getting me really fired up about reading. There is one scene where he as to dive down into the plane past the pilot's decomposing body, but otherwise there was nothing questionable that I remember.

Not sure if this is too late now, but the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series is amazing. Percy is around 13 in the first book and it has a lot of action and adventure if your stepson is into that. The Harry Potter series are also amazing for young children (and adults lol).Harry is 11 in the first book and it also has a lot of adventure and magic!

I'm a teacher, around the same age as your stepson, and my kids love The Bailey School Kids books. They take an unlikely character and make them do silly tasks: Frankstein Can't Be a Doctor! Kind of thing.

It's a little bit old, but My Father's Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett is really good. I read it all the time as a kid and still love it. I plan to read it to my kids when they are older. :)

A lot of boys prefer nonfiction to fiction. You might try facts books (like odd facts) to peak his interest. My nephew loves books about space--and we've managed to branch off of that to find fiction books he likes.

Big Nate is really popular with that age group, as well as Diary of a Wimpy Kid. If he likes comic book format, give the Big Nate graphic novels a try, then you can try to transition to the novels.

The I Survived series by Lauren Tarshis is also insanely popular. We can barely keep them on the shelf.

I would recommend talking to your local children's librarian (take him with you so they can ask him questions). Another useful tool is NoveList. See if your library has it as a digital resource. You can search by genre, sub-genre, or get read-alikes based on things that he enjoys. You can also search by Lexile or Accelerated Reader level if his teachers require them to read books on a certain level.

Edgar Rice Burroughs Tarzan series or the Mars series. If he likes science fiction, try R. Heinlein, or Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game.

Has he tried reading any of the Magic Tree House series titles by Mary Pope Osborne? There are at last count over 50 of them and I don't know how many companion nonfiction books. My son, who is now 16, LOVED these books so much. The Magic Tree House has its own website but I can't post the link as I haven't posted enough yet in the forums - wonderful site!

If he's into Star Wars, try the Jedi Academy series by Jeffrey Brown. They're a lot like Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Big Nate, only with Star Wars.
