Okay, first of all, you should try TrueBlood, even if you have already watched the HBO series. The books and the show are very different, and that is one of my all time favorites!
Then maybe try something by Gina Showalter. She's very talented.

Vampire Academy is a good read but Bloodlines - its spinoff but it continued the storyline, and maintained characters, much like a sequel but not really - is better. I do recommend though, that you read Vampire Academy before Bloodlines as the later sometimes references some parts of Vampire Academy. Also, it builds up the back story of the female protagonist and helps build up the world where they exist in.

The Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward is absolutely fantastic! There are quite a few books in the series at this point and I can always grab them to re-read if need be, they never get old! These aren't quite your traditional vampires but definitely play on the more primal aspects of masculinity, which only draws you in deeper into the books. Each one focuses on a different Brother and how they came to be who they are as well as often giving them a romantic interest. I would definitely recommend these as they are (save for Harry Potter) my most favorite book series (and have happily held that position since I first read them seven years ago)! Happy reading!

Darren Shan's Cirque Du Freak series is really good. It will keep you busy too, last time I checked there were 12 books in the series, I think someone told me that there was more though, I'm not quite sure. I'm going to look into it myself as I have not yet finished the series.

Laura K Hamilton is a good one for this. Depending on what type of Vampire books you are looking for, there are thousands out there. I've always enjoyed Ann Rice's books. The True Blood Series was pretty good. Those had drama and humor and steam in them. I enjoyed the series and it does not even compare to the TV version. If you are looking for a quick, teenage drama read, the Vampire Diaries series was ok. I really enjoyed Salem's Lot by Stephen King as well.

I remember the middle school hallways being filled with people holding the Twilight books when they first came out.

Yes! Both of these are great!

If you are looking for a long series The Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris are the books the HBO show True Blood was based on. For a standalone novel The Vampire's Violin by Michael Romkey is an interesting depiction that I would recommend.

Have you tried the Blood of Eden series? I personally really love it. It's about a girl named Aly who lives in a city of vampires that drinks the blood of humans and tries to keep out plagued vampires with a wall. It's been a while since I've read it, and I'm not giving any details away because I don't want to ruin it, but it's awesome and even my husband read it!
