I was homeschooled during high school so I had a little more freedom with my books and I loved them all more than books I had to read for class in public education. We did a section on short stories, where I was introduced to Kurt Vonnegut through books such as Welcome to the Monkey House. I also greatly remember The Lottery. We did a sections on plays where I read A Raisin in the Sun, The Heidi Chronicles, Antigone, Our Town, and For Colored Girls Who Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Wasn't Enough, just to name a few. For history, I read books like Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States (a favorite of mind, both book and author/historian). I remember having a lot of fun with books those years.

My favorite book I read in high school oddly enough was my one of my least favorite when I read it. I remember struggling through 1984 by George Orwell and rolling my eyes often. Now when I reread it as an adult, I can't figure out why I hated it so much. High school is also where I found my love of Shakespeare. My favorite character out of any book is still Iago from Othello. I have also read every Edgar Allan Poe book and poem he has ever written after being introduced to The Fall of the House of Usher.

My favorite book in high school was The River and the Source by Margaret Ogolla. This also happened to be a compulsory literature set book by that time.

My favorite was Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury. His portrayal of summer really grabbed me visually and emotionally.

1984 by George Orwell. Anything dystopian will usually keep my attention.

My favorite was The Joy Luck Club. I loved hearing the different stories of Chinese immigrant families and their experiences in the changing environment.

I loved Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. I remember being so heartbroken about the end, but I loved this book nonetheless.

Very very strange!
It just occurred to me for the first time that I really did not particularly like ANY of the books we covered in high school literature. This despite the fact that the teacher I had for both freshman literature as well as English Lit when I was a senior was my favorite teacher of all time and happened to be the head of the high school's English department. It was a "mutual admiration society", as it were, because she also thought highly of me and wanted me to pursue a career in literary criticism. She was crushed when I told her I was getting into engineering after high school.
I suppose it was because I was more interested in her analysis of the books we covered that I took a more clinical view of the books rather than just reading them for pleasure.
But my favorite book of my high school era was Lord Of The Flies which I did a term paper (my choice of book) analysis of which earned me an A-.

I'm between The Chosen and the Book Thief. I didn't love the Book Thief the first time I read it, but I think it's one of those books that gets better with each reread.
