I was looking for recommendations for books like The DaVinci Code. Something that has suspense, historical references, conspiracies about a universal story that every one knows, with a bit of action tossed in for good measure. I also prefer a female protagonist but I will read pretty much anything.

I also enjoy authors like Andy McDermott and James Rollins.

1984 by George Orwell, if you didn't already read it, of course.
