NEED YOUR HELP! Christian Sci-fi Fantasy Recommendations

Post by LauraLeeWasHere »

Now that I've come across an entire website of book experts, I need your help!

I LOVE the genre of Sci-fi/Fantasy especially if it's overtly CHRISTIAN, which is not always easy to find because it usually deals with all sorts of creatures that have some occult/druid undertones.

But my favorite author of this type is Stephen R. Lawhead. But through the years I've read his ENTIRE catalogue of books and all his series. So now I need more.

Can you put on your "thinking caps" and recommend to me a good series of this kind. Or even just one really good book.

I'm "poor folk", so if there is a deal to be had that you know about, maybe you could let me know that too.

I have Kindle on my Android tablet.

Thanks for sharing your expertise and knowledge. I'm excited to read your suggestions.

Sincerely, Laura-Lee

and to open its to seals,
for You were slain and have redeemed us to God,
by your blood, out of every tribe and tongue and people and Nation." Rev. 5:9

I adore Stephen Lawhead as well! I’ve read his Pendragon books and am currently on the last of the Song of Albion books.

C.S. Lewis may seem like an obvious suggestion but if you haven’t read his cosmic trilogy (sometimes called the space trilogy) I’d recommend that you do so immediately. It’s overtly Christian but some of the best science fiction I’ve read. The second book in the series ‘Perelandra’ is, in my humble opinion, the greatest work of fiction ever produced. They’re actually (bold claim incoming) miles better than the Narnia books and written for an adult audience.

Ah! A Stephen Lawhead AND CS Lewis fan. Say "hello" to your new best friend! I have read "Out of the Silent Planet" but that was back in high school (30years ago). and I should take another run at Perlandra (think that's it's title). The third one I can't even remember what it's called. But what a person doesn't enjoy at 16 years old can change massively through the years. Thanks for some great ideas.
I am jealous about you reading the Lawhead books. You can only enjoy a book for the first time during the, uh, ... first time. If you know what I mean!

Haha I know what you mean! I wish I could read Perelandra for the first time again. The third one is ‘That Hideous Strength’ and it goes a bit wild!

Till We Have Faces might be a good shout from C.S. Lewis as well. It’s not a Christian story and actually deals with mythology but it has the same wholesome tone as the other stuff!

Ah! Right, right. That hideous strength. It has been a while.
I must admit that I read a heap of Fantasy books that aren't Christian at all but then I have to be a little more "on guard" so that some "garbagio" doesn't make it too deeply into my brain. That place is solely reserved for the theme song from the Brady Bunch. "It's the story of a lovely lady, who was bringing up three very lovely girls. All of them had..." He he. Now it's rolling around in your brain too.

Thanks again for your help, Mr. Moore.

Since you mention your favorite genre, allow me to share this thought. The basic foundation of Christianity should be read in the Bible. If I may suggest, start from there. Other authored book is just a mere reference. Try to explore the four gospel in the New Testament. Have a nice day!

I second this! I was never too keen on the final book in the trilogy ("That Hideous Strength") but the second book, "Perelandra," is amazing.

My absolute favorite Christian fantasy series is the Ilyon Chronicles by Jaye L. Knight. The final book hasn't been published yet, but books 1 through 5 (plus a few short stories) should keep you busy for a while!

Other good ones include:
The Blood Race by K.A. Emmons
Auralia's Colors by Jeffery Overstreet
anything by Donita K. Paul :)
